Gal Gadot is indeed a wonder woman.
Looks like the newcomer is following a similar path as her Wonder Woman heroine Diana Prince, who fought for equality and for the less empowered.
Gadot was presented with a special honor at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Thursday. Introduced by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Gadot received the #SeeHer Award, honoring her for challenging female stereotypes on screen and off.
The Association of National Advertisers stands behind this award that made its debut just last year with actress Viola Davies being the honoree in its inaugural year.
In her powerful speech, Gadot drew a parallel between the role of her superhero character, to that of an actor.
“As artists, and as filmmakers, I believe it’s not only our job to entertain, but our duty to inspire and educate for love and respect,” she said. “In the past weeks and months, we’ve been witnessing a movement in our industry and society, and I want to share this award with all the women and men who stand for what’s right: Standing for those who can’t stand or speak for themselves. My promise and commitment to all of you is that I will never be silenced, and we will continue to band together to make strides, uniting for equality.”
Gadot also said that she has always wanted to play a role of a strong and independent female, just like the role she portrayed in Wonder Woman. “She’s full of heart, strength, compassion, and forgiveness. She sees wrong that must be made right. She takes action when everyone around her is idle. She commands the attention of the world, and in doing so, she sets a positive example for humanity.”
Godot also said that despite the progress made with the number of female-led movies and movies directed by female director growing, “there’s still a long way to go.”
Both Gadot and Jenkins are signed on for the Wonder Woman sequel.
