Magic Mike is Being Adapted into a Musical

2012’s comedy-drama Magic Mike is coming to stage. The hit movie, which starred Channing Tatum and was loosely based on the actor’s early life, is being adapted into a musical. Titled Magic Mike The Musical, the show will premiere in Boston in November and is scheduled to run through January 5, 2020.

“When we were shooting Magic Mike, I looked at myself in a thong and thought: ‘well Chan, say goodbye to your career!’ ” said Tatum, who will serve as a producer, in a statement. “So the idea that seven years later a Pulitzer Prize-winning creative team would be making a full-fledged musical prequel is definitive proof that God loves strippers. I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter in the Magic Mike story. So get ready, Boston. The road to Broadway begins on November 30!”

According to Deadline, Trip Cullman (Lobby Hero) is attached as director with Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) providing the score and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee) providing the book. Camille A. Brown, who is known for her work on Once On This Island, will take care of the choreography part.

Magic Mike The Musical will be set before the 2012’s original and its sequel, 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, and will tell “the story of college-student-turned-male-entertainer Mike Lane. Struggling to make ends meet, Mike takes a job dancing at an exclusive night club… and winds up loving every minute of it. But as he scrambles to hide his alter ego from his dad and girlfriend, he finds himself needing to make some difficult choices. Can Mike follow his dreams without losing more than his clothes?”

the original Magic Mike movie told the story about a 19-year-old college dropout who is looking for a job and ends up becoming a male stripper. The movie was a surprise commercial success, earning $167 million compared to $7 million budget and inspiring a sequel Magic Mike XXL.
