What a night and what a beginning to the awards season!

Sunday’s 75th annual Golden Globes ceremony is definitely a night to remember as it wasn’t just a night of celebrating outstanding achievements in film and television, it was a night that symbolized that a new era in Hollywood has begun.

The ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills with Seth Meyers as host. The night began with many stars choosing to make a powerful statement on the red carpet as they were clad in black, symbolizing their solidarity with victims of sexual harassment. After the slew of sexual misconduct scandals, “Time’s Up” initiative encouraged stars attending the ceremony to wear black.

The evening was also fun-filled. Even though Meyers had a very complicated event to host on his hands, he definitely managed to make lemonade out of lemons. His opening monologue really set the tone for the night with a simple straight forward delivery, with the expected zings and burns at Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and others.

The big winners of the night was HBO’s female led Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale who won Best Limited Series or TV Movie and Best TV Series, Drama respectively; Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won Best TV Series, Comedy/Musical, and Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri who both won Best Picture in the Comedy/Musical and Drama categories respectively.

The most moving moment of the evening was when Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille award. The media mogul received the award to the tune of massive cheers and her first standing ovation. Oprah is the first black woman to receive the honor for her “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Wearing black like many others, Oprah’s moving speech was a message of hope for the future.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up,” Winfrey said, drawing her second standing ovation. “Their time is up!” She later said, “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon!” drawing her third standing ovation.
