The first official photo from the upcoming Elton John biopic titled Rocketman has dropped and it even got John himself all excited. 

The image is of Taron Egerton in character as the pop icon. We’re talking about a complete transformation with Egerton clad in a gold lamé jacket paired with glittery sunglasses and winged boots while lounging on a couch inside a private plane. John himself took to social media, sharing the image on Instagram and writing, “Words cannot describe how proud and excited I am. Hold on to your glasses, this is going to be a wild ride!”

The feature is described by the studio as an “uncensored human story”. The “epic musical fantasy” will retell the musical icon’s early years. 

Also starring in the Dexter Fletcher helmed biopic are Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Gemma Jones, and Bryce Dallas Howard. 

Rocketman will premiere on May 31, 2019.

Fenn has been tapped to portray silent film star Alla Nazimova in the feature titled Silent Life. 

The biopic about silent-era film star Rudolph Valentino will be helmed by Vladislav Kozlov, who will also star as Valentino himself. Also starring are Isabella Rossellini as Valentino’s mother, Franco Nero as Valentino’s spirit, and Terry Moore as the mourning “Lady in Black.” Paul Rodriguez, Dalton Cyr, Paul Louis Harrell, and Ksenia Jarova round up the cast. 

Valentino died unexpectedly in 1926. The biopic follows a group of journalists and their mysterious encounter with a woman clad in all black at Valentino’s annual memorial service. The production will film on location, including Valentino’s grave at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as well as Miceli’s Restaurant in Hollywood, and the private Rudolph Valentino museum in North Hollywood. 

Kozlov is also producing with Natalia Dar via their Dreamer Pictures banner.

The rapper is working on a new biopic about iconic musician Marvin Gaye, who died in 1984 after being shot by his father. 

While waiting for Jamie Foxx’s limited series about Gaye to materialize, Dr. Dre has secured the rights to Gaye’s musical catalog as well as the singer’s estate’s blessing. 

Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, film credits include the 2015 Straight Outta Compton. The film chronicles NWA’s origin story in southern California and was nominated for best original screenplay at the 2016 Academy Awards. 

Previous attempts to dramatize the singer’s life story include Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini and Scott Rudin. There’s also a documentary featuring never-before-seen footage titled What’s Going On. Scheduled to go be released in 2017 the project is still gestating.

This version of Gaye’s life is reportedly in the early stages of development.

Tristar Pictures announced that the 61-year-old actor is set to play Fred Rogers aka Mr. Rogers in a biopic about the life of children’s TV icon, star of the show Mister Rogers Neighborhood, which ran for 31 seasons, from 1968 until 2011.

The project is directed by Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and based on a script penned by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Transparent). Heller told Variety that she is “thrilled to be making” the film.

“The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human, I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

The film is inspired by Rogers’ real-life friendship with journalist Tom Junod, an assignment that ended up in a classic 1998 Esquire profile. Junod tweeted about the news saying, however, that the film is “very loosely” based on his Esquire story.

Rogers’ Emmy-nominated series was one of the longest-running children’s shows of all time. Seems fit that it’ll Hanks who was chosen to pay homage to one of America’s truly good real-life figures.

Portraying Franklin in the movie is American Idol veteran, Jennifer Hudson. Actually, it was Franklin herself that hand picked Hudson to star in the biopic as the Queen of Soul.

This won’t be the first time Hudson will be starring in an onscreen musical drama, having starred in Dreamgirls, her debut feature film, winning an Oscar for her performance.

Franklin’s career spans six decades with 44 Grammy nominations. She made history as the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The biopic will be based on her memoir, Aretha. The film is a long-gestating project and has been in the works since 2011.

The news was announced during Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. Davis introduced Hudson to sing a couple songs and then told the audience that she will be playing Franklin.

Producing the project are Scott Bernstein and Harvey Mason, who has worked with Franklin and also produced music for Dreamgirls.

The actor and filmmaker has recently finished his self-directed Tommy Wiseau biopic The Disaster Artist and now he’s looking into starring and directing a movie about the life and legacy of American poet and singer-songwriter Shel Silverstein. Silverstein, who died in 1999 wrote several iconic works of children’s literature, including The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Falling Up.

EW confirmed that Franco is in talks to helm the project for the new MWM Studios, formerly OddLot Entertainment. Under its previous banner, MWM contributed to the production of films like Drive, Hell or High Water and Rabbit Hole.

Also working on the project is producer for the upcoming Amy Schumer comedy I Fell Pretty as well as other personnel from Wonderland Sound and Vision. Penning the script are cowriters Chris Shafer and Paul Vickair. The script is said to be a take on the writer’s personal and professional dealings, based on Lisa Rogak’s book A Boy Named Shel.

The studio behind the film, Twentieth Century Fox, released a statement on Friday saying: “Twentieth Century Fox Film has temporarily halted production on Bohemian Rhapsody due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer.”

The BBC was the first to report that it was illness that forces the director to stop working on the Freddie Mercury film which will tell the story of the late Queen frontman’s life. The director’s representative said it was “a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family.”

Filming is taking place in the UK with Rami Malek starring as Freddie Mercury. Singer’s past directing credits include The Usual Suspects, four X-Men movies and Superman Returns.

Despite this delay, Bohemian Rhapsody is still scheduled for its original release date on December 25, 2018.

The Oscar winner (best supporting actor for his 2013 performance in Dallas Buyers Club) will don the iconic silk pajamas and smoking jacket for the project that is still in early stages of development with Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment. The movie was initially set up at Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. When the rights expired, they were purchased by producer Jerry Weintraub (Ocean’s Eleven, Westworld) for Warner Bros, but after Weintraub’s death in 2015, Ratner snapped up the rights for his own company.

This casting announcement comes just one week after Hefner passing away at the age of 91. Ratner had hoped to introduce Leto to Hefner, inviting him to the mansion back in April for the premiere of Amazon’s American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story. However, that day Hefner’s health prevented him from greeting guests.

Leto is currently starring in Blade Runner 2049, in theaters now.
