The first look at the Chris Evans legal drama arrived Wednesday. 

Defending Jacob is based on the 2012 bestselling crime novel of the same name by William Landay. It tells the story of Massachusetts’ assistant district attorney Andy Barber (Evans) and what his family undergoes after his son, Jacob, played by Jaeden Martell is accused of murdering a classmate. The series also stars Michelle Dockery as Evans’ wife, Laurie.

The series hails from director, executive producer, and showrunner Morten Tyldum. In addition to starring, the Captain America and The Avengers star also serves as exec producer with Rosalie Swedlin and Adam Shulman for Anonymous Content.

Defending Jacob premieres April 24 on Apple TV+.

A quartet of actors were tapped to join the forthcoming drama — Cherry Jones, Pablo Schreiber, Betty Gabriel and Sakina Jaffrey.

The new additions to the cast will star opposite the previously announced Chris Evans, Michelle Dockery and Jaeden Martell in the limited series from Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

The series, created and written by Mark Bomback, is based on William Landay’s bestselling novel. It is described as a character-driven thriller, which tells the story of a father, Andy Barber (Evans), dealing with the accusation that his son, Jacob (Martell), is a 14-year-old murderer.

Jones will play Joanna Klein, a top defense lawyer in the area. Schreiber will portray Neal Logiudice, another Assistant District Attorney and a colleague of Andy Barber. Gabriel is Paula Duffy, a detective who works alongside Barber. Jaffrey will play County District Attorney Lynn Canavan.

Production is currently underway in Boston.

Defending Jacob was described as “a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.” It sounds like a pretty complex tale, which will require Evans to flex his acting muscles for a change.

Evans shouldn’t have any trouble, since Captain America isn’t the only amazing character he embodied in the last few years. The Avengers movies kept him pretty busy, but Evans still found time for several indie projects, including Snowpiercer and The Iceman. He also gave directing a try with romance drama Before We Go.

Evans’ casting isn’t the only reason to get excited about Defending Jacob. The upcoming limited series will be written and created by Mark Bomback, the masterminded behind Planet of the Apes trilogy. Morten Tyldum, who received an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game, is attached to direct the series and executive produce. A premiere date hasn’t been set yet, but it’s expected to stream sometime in 2019.
