At last the first teaser trailer for the Downton Abbey movie has been released and you’re up for a delightful experience.

Titled, Downton Abbey, the trailer features the return of the cast of the Crawley family and their servants from the sixth and final season of the show. In the teaser, we see the interior of the Crawley’s home, followed by shots of their grandiose estate, all to the tune of a new rendition of the show’s theme music.

Rumors of a Downton Abbey film began circling as soon as the series ended. But in fact, executive producer Gareth Neame confirmed that among the production team, the idea started percolating as early as season five. “We felt we were quitting while we were ahead… We wanted to go while people still wanted more. It was a way to sweeten the pill for the millions of fans around the world — the show was coming to an end, but we hoped to put a movie together.”

The rumors of a film that is an extension of the PBS television series was confirmed back in July. But plot details are scarce, even after the teaser…

“We had to do everything that all the fans wanted, but we had to do something that was fresh and original,” said Neame. “We wanted a kind of storyline and sense of scale and production value that exceeded even the very high production values the TV show was remembered for. On the big screen, it just had to look a little bit more lavish and a little bit bigger and better.”

He continued: “It’s a return to these really beloved characters and seeing them in new sets of circumstances and how they will deal with those, and hopefully, a good mix of the drama, comedy, and romance that had been the mainstays of it all.”

The Downton Abbey cast is reuniting for a BBC movie. The highly anticipated feature is actually happening after officially receiving the green light. 

The entire cast is expected to return for the big-screen adaptation with Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and more set to reprise their original roles.

The news was confirmed via the official Downton Abbey Twitter account on Friday, writing, “Welcome back to Downton! We’re thrilled to announce that #DowntonAbbey is coming to the big screen. Film production begins this summer.”

The feature will be directed by Brian Percival from a script penned by Julian Fellowes who will also serve as executive producer alongside Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge and Nigel Marchant. 

“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” Neame said in a statement. “Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”

Downton Abbey ran for six years on ITV in the UK and PBS in the US.

NBC has picked up 10 episodes of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes called The Gilded Age. This news comes after the project has been in the works for a while. The network has set a 2019 release date for the period drama.

Set in New York City in 1882, the series centers on Marian Brook. The young heiress must find her way into the world of her family’s wealthy neighbors when complications arise as new money is thrown into the mix of social barriers typical of an ordered world.

“To write The Gilded Age is the fulfillment of a personal dream,” Fellowes said in a statement. “I have been fascinated by this period of American history for many years and now NBC has given me the chance to bring it to a modern audience. I could not be more excited and thrilled. The truth is, America is a wonderful country with a rich and varied history, and nothing could give me more pleasure than be the person to bring that compelling history to the screen.”

Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment said that the network is absolutely “thrilled that NBC and Universal Television will bring… a new take on both the emerging rich and the working class who were intricately entwined in opulent New York in 1882,” adding that “it’s an addictive new universe of fabulous people with the same signature style, wit and emotional resonance for which Julian is famous.”
