Meredith Grey is staying put for at least one more year as the series has been renewed for its 15th season. The news was announced Friday evening by the network. 

“Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart and millions of viewers feel the same way,” said Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment, in a statement. “Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever.”

This is definitely some good news after it was announced that longtime stars and fan favorites, Sarah Drew who plays April Kepner and Jessica Capshaw will exit the show at the end of the current season. 

Three months it was revealed that star of the show, Ellen Pompeo signed a two-year extension deal to remain as the main lead on Grey’s Anatomy. While it hasn’t been formally ordered yet by ABC, this means that there’s potential for a 16th season as well. 

The upcoming season will return Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Jesse Williams, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary and Giacomo Gianniotti.

Ellen Pompeo will continue scrubbing in as Meredith in ABC’s hit medical drama, should the network renew the Shondaland creation.

Pompeo’s decision to extend her contract for two more seasons comes with additional responsibilities, serving as a producer, beginning midway through the current season. She will also co-executive produce an upcoming untitled Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.

According to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Pompeo will make a whopping salary of $550,000 per episode. This will make her the highest paid actress on television.

Though this doesn’t mean that the series will end after season 16, it doesn’t seem like Pompeo isn’t looking for new and exciting acting gigs, but rather has her eye on roles behind the camera.

“Producing and directing is where I’m challenged and where I’m learning,” Pompeo told Deadline. ”Acting, I don’t know. If the right role comes along, and it’s interesting, then never say never, but I do have three kids. I don’t necessarily want to travel around. I wouldn’t say it’s my burning desire to go act in something else.”

Even though it has yet to receive an official pick-up beyond its current 14th season, if it will run though to season 16, Grey’s Anatomy, that currently ranks third for ABC in total audience, would officially beat ER for the title of longest-running medical drama on TV.

In season 13 fans discovered that Owen’s sister Megan, who also served as an army medic, was found alive after she was believed to have died in a helicopter crash. Season 14 of the medical drama will see Abigail Spencer instead of Bridget Regan, who portrayed Owen’s sister, Megan Hunt, in earlier seasons, since she is unable to return due to a scheduling conflict.

Megan did not appear in the finale as fans only got to see a tuft of red her on a stretcher. There’s no doubt her arrival in season 14 will make for some good drama, especially for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) who finally opened herself up romantically to Riggs (Martin Henderson), Megan’s love interest.

For Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) it will be a conflicting time as he must deal with the fact that he went on with his life, thinking his sister was gone, but in actual fact she was alive all those years.

It will be interesting to see how Owen will handle his sister’s return as well as Dr. Teddy Altman’s return. Altman’s comeback for an arc in season 14 was previously announced. The final episode of season 13 saw her speaking with Hunt’s estranged wife Amelia, as she was in charge of Megan’s recovery at the military hospital in Germany.

Grey’s Anatomy will premiere on Thursday, September 28.
