House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. It’s set a few hundred years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, and will feature the story of House Targaryen and the Targaryen civil war that became known as the “Dance of the Dragons”.

Starring in the series are Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, and Fabien Frankel.

HBO confirmed Tuesday afternoon that it has given a series order to a new series called House of the Dragon.

The prequel series based on the Fire & Blood novel was created by author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.” 

This news comes after it was rumored that HBO had dropped another Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts that was set thousands of years before the original. A pilot episode starring Watts had been filmed in Northern Ireland.

HBO declined to comment on those reports.

Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx will star in the drama pilot from George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman. They join previously announced Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, and Miranda Richardson.

Here’s the official logline: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Back in November, Martin told Entertainment Tonight, “Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

Production is set to start this summer.

Joining Naomi Watts, whose casting was announced Tuesday is Josh Whitehouse. 

While it is known that Watts has been cast as a lead character, described as a “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret,” nothing is known about Whitehouse’s character. 

George R.R. Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire novel series served as the basis for GoT did provide some prequel news writing on his blog that the show’s title all be The Long Night. 

The prequel takes place thousands of years before GoT. It chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. 

Penning the sequel are Martin and Jane Goldman. She will also serve as showrunner. She and Martin will executive produce along with Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and Vince Gerardis.

Whitehouse is best known for his role on the BBC series Poldark. You can see him next in the remake of Valley Girl currently in the works.

Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass) and A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R.R. Martin are writing the show with the network actively searching for a director. The filming should begin in early 2019.

While plenty of details about Game of Thrones prequel remain unknown, HBO recently released a description of the series’ storyline:

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

It is important to note that HBO has only ordered a pilot and hasn’t committed to making a full series yet. In case that Game of Thrones prequel pilot ends up getting greenlit, we shouldn’t expect to see it before 2020. The network’s executives said on previous occasions that the follow-up series to Game of Thrones wouldn’t find its way to television “at least a year” after the original show airs its eighth and final season.

Final episodes of GoT are set to premiere in the first half of 2019.
