]]>The Queen of Pop kicked off her speech by recalling the first time she went to a gay club with her ballet teacher, and witnessing the “kind of freedom and joy and happiness” that she’d never seen before.
“I finally felt like I was not alone, that it was OK to be different and to not be like everybody else. And that after all, I was not a freak. I felt at home, and it gave me hope,” said Madonna in her speech.
She also took a moment to pay tribute to several of her friends she lost to the AIDS epidemic, and how this loss inspired her to fight back and become a true ally to the LGBTQ community.
“Death and loss brought me new life. Brought me to life. Brought me to love… As soon as you really understand what it means to love, you understand what it takes to become a human being. And that it is every human’s duty to fight. To advocate. To do whatever we can. And whatever it takes,” concluded Madonna.

Beyoncé started her portion of the speech by praising her late uncle Johnny, whom she described as most fabulous gay man she’s ever known. He was the one who helped raise the singer and her sister Solange, who both witnessed his battle with HIV – but also his brave and unapologetic approach to life.
“I am hoping that his struggles serve to open pathways for other young people to live more freely. LGBTQ rights are human rights. To choose who you love is your human right. How you identify and see yourself is your human right,” said Beyoncé.

]]>The list of contenders for the best film includes some of the biggest box office hits of the year, such as Crazy Rich Asians and Deadpool 2. Some of the more underrated, but equally impressive projects received a nod in limited release category.
GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis believes these films, like hundreds of other nominees they recognized in the past, challenged misconceptions and inspired LGBTQ acceptance.
“The images and stories recognized by the GLAAD Media Awards over the past 30 years raised the bar for LGBTQ inclusion in the media industry and changed the hearts and minds of countless audience members around the world,” said Ellis.
