The cancelation of Minx comes as a shocker since the production of the second season is wrapping up this week. HBO’s partner Lionsgate TV will look for a new home for the comedy series, led by Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson.

Minx isn’t the only show to fall victim to HBO Max’s slate review. The streamer recently removed Gordita Chronicles from its platform, and later announced their first original scripted series Love Life, led and executive produced by Anna Kendrick, suffered the same fate.

Another shocker came with the removal of Westworld and The Nevers from HBO Max, but they’ll likely resurface on other platforms. Westworld was recently canceled after four seasons, and HBO’s latest decision comes as a surprise since it’s one of its biggest hits of the last decade.

The streamer has handed out a 10-episode order for the show that will explore a dark mentorship that forms between a Las Vegas diva (Smart) and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old.

An American Pickle is officially heading to the forthcoming streaming service after it acquired the film’s worldwide rights. According to Variety, HBO Max bought the film from Sony Pictures so it wouldn’t be delayed in light of theater closures.

The film, an adaptation of the 2013 New Yorker series Sell Out by Simon Rich, stars Seth Rogen in dual leading roles. An American Pickle is directed by Brandon Trost from a script by Rich. Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver are producing for Point Grey. Rich, Alex McAtee, and Ted Gidlow are exec producing. 

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with HBO Max to release this film,” Rogen said. “We worked very hard and put as much of ourselves in this story as possible. We’re very proud of the end result and we can’t wait for people to get to see it.”

The cast members took to social media to announce that as a part of the All-In Challenge, someone will get a chance to join them for their upcoming reunion show.

Celebrity dog groomer Jess Rona is heading to the streamer to serve as a judge on a new dog grooming competition show.

HBO Max has given the green light to the 12-episode, half-hour series Hot Dog (working title). Each episode will feature three dog groomers facing off against each other with a series of challenges. The series will also feature commentary from celebrity guests, while Rona will lead the judging panel.

Multiple outlets confirm that 15 years after the hit sitcom aired its series finale, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer have signed on to take part in a taped unscripted reunion special for HBO Max. 

But don’t get too excited — the reunion isn’t a reboot or a revival, but an opportunity for the six friends to get back together and talk about their show. 

“Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max in a statement. “I became aware of Friend’ when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. Friends ran for 10 seasons from 1994-2004 on NBC. All ten seasons of the sitcom left Netflix at the end of 2019 and will be available to stream again once HBO Max launches in May.

HBO Max has greenlighted The Prince, an animated satire based on Janetti’s Instagram account which pokes fun at the British royals through the eyes of Prince George, the eldest child of Prince William and Kate. 

Family Guy producer Janetti will write and executive produce the series. He will also voice star alongside Orlando Bloom, Condola Rashad, Lucy Punch, Tom Hollander, Alan Cumming, Frances De La Tour, and Iwan Rheon.

Emmy winning Uzo Aduba has been cast in the forthcoming limited series from HBO Max. 

Aduba is set to star opposite Lupita Nyong’o in the series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel of the same name. Also starring is Zackary Momoh. 

According to the streamer, the series tells the story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a self-assured young woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze (Momoh).

“Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the west. Ifemelu heads for America, where she finds academic success but is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black,” according to the official description. “Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous undocumented life in London. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who was first to report the news, the project is far from being a done deal.

The news comes after months of speculations with the most recent member of the cast, Jennifer Aniston, saying she’s up for it.

In June, Aniston told Ellen DeGeneres that the gang was all up for a reunion. “I would do it,” she said. “The girls would do it, and the boys would do it, I’m sure. Listen, anything can happen.”

HBO Max and producers WBTV did not comment.

The original show ran for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004, at NBC and continued gaining popularity with young audiences with its success in syndication and Netflix. In 2021, the show will move to HBO Max.
