Next Goal Wins is based on a 2014 British documentary of the same name, about the national soccer team of American Samoa. According to Variety, Waititi’s film will follow the true story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen (Fassbender) who attempts to turn the underdog team’s fortunes around in time to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, after years of losses.
Fassbender’s casting is the only one to be announced. It is known that casting calls have gone out for actors to play the team members.
The Kiwi filmmaker will helm Next Goal Wins before taking on Marvel’s 4th Thor film, Love & Thunder.
