Sethu’s name was first mentioned in connection with Doctor Who in January when rumors about Millie Gibson’s departure made the headlines. BBC finally decided to address the speculations, and it turns out Sethu won’t be replacing Gibson, but joining Gatwa as his second companion, instead.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed Sethu’s casting and revealed she already started shooting her scenes alongside Gatwa and Gibson.

“I first worked with Varada on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS… We’ve got Ncuti, Millie, and Varada fighting side by side–we need all three because the stakes are higher than ever,” said Davies in a statement.

Varada Sethu previously worked with Disney+ on the Star Wars series Andor, and she feels like the luckiest person in the world to join Doctor Who. She thanked the show’s fans for welcoming her with open arms and added she’s looking forward to going on adventures with Gatwa and Gibson.

The teaser opens with Tate’s Donna Noble pondering about the past saying, “Sometimes, I think there’s something missing. Like I had something lovely and it’s gone.” During her original run on the show, Donna’s memories of her time with the Doctor were erased so she could survive, but the new taser hints at her reunion with Tennent’s Doctor.

The teaser also features Neil Patrick Harris as the show’s new villain and Yasmin Finney as Rose, but the biggest revelation comes in the very last seconds. Gatwa appears at the end of the teaser, asking a question on everyone’s mind – “Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?”

Doctor Who is celebrating its 60th anniversary next year, with Russell T Davies returning as showrunner. Tennant will make a comeback as the Doctor in the three-hour anniversary special in November before Gatwa takes over in Season 14, set to premiere in 2024.

Gatwa is taking reigns from Jodie Whittaker, who became the first female Time Lord in 2017. She announced her departure in 2021 and is set to make her final appearance in the last in a trio of specials, which is expected to air on BBC this October.

She’ll be replaced by Gatwa, who said he’s “honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared” to play the Doctor and join forces with Russell T Davies, who’s returning as the showrunner.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground,” said Gatwa.

Gatwa is best known for his role in Sex Education, for which he received three nominations for the BAFTA Television Awards. We’ll next get to see him in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in lead roles.
