Netflix has unveiled another look at its two-part drama featuring the life and career of Tejano star Selena played by Christian Serratos (The Walking Dead). 

The series, coming in December, tells the story of singer Selena Quintanilla Perez, delving deep into the making of her musical career and her relationships. The trailer gives a sneak-peek into Selena’s teenage years, early career, life on the road, and backstage drama.

Per the streamer, Selena: The Series is a “coming-of-age story following Selena as she chases her dreams, and the heart-wrenching and life-changing sacrifices she and her family make as they navigate the highs and lows of success, loss, love, and music.”

News that the Emmy sweeping series hit the streamer early was announced by Schitt’s Creek star and co-creator Dan Levy on Twitter Saturday. 

“Surprise! Season 6 & the Best Wishes, Warmest Regards documentary just dropped early on Netflix! Have a great weekend!” he tweeted. The show’s final season and documentary and its making were originally supposed to be released on the streaming platform days later. 

Schitt’s Creek won big at the 2020 Emmys, taking home the coveted Outstanding Comedy Series award and with all main cast members—Levy, Annie Murphy, and Catherine O’Hara, scoring gold.

While accepting the Outstanding Supporting Actor award, Levy said: “First of all, I would not be here if it weren’t for the six-year master class that was led by two brilliant comedic minds that I had had the good fortune of working with for the past six seasons—my dad, Eugene Levy, and the magnificent Catherine O’Hara, who led by example, they led without ego and they led with excitement and the trickle effect of that was felt through everybody. Season 4 will have 14 episodes that will be split into two parts, with seven episodes in each.

The series stars Jason Bateman as Marty Byrd, a financial advisor who starts laundering money for the Mexican drug cartel and moves to the Ozarks with his wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), who gets involved in his schemes including operating a casino, and their children Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner).

Chris Mundy will return as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Julia Garner, Charlie Tahan, and Lisa Emery are also returning for the final season.

“A super sized season means super sized problems for the Byrdes,” Bateman said. “I’m excited to end with a bang(s).”

Since it’s 2017 debut, Ozark has had 14 Emmy nominations and Bateman won an Emmy for best directing in a drama series and Garner won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series.

Witherspoon, whose rom-com credits include Sweet Home Alabama, Election, This Means War, Pleasantville, Home Again, and the Legally Blonde films, will star in two new romantic comedies titled Your Place or Mine and The Cactus.

“We have been looking for the right feature opportunities to collaborate with Ted Sarandos, Scott Stuber, and the entire team at Netflix for a while and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with them on these two romantic comedies,” Witherspoon said in a statement. “Both Sarah Haywood’s and Aline Brosh McKenna’s stories blend everything we love about traditional RomComs with strong, smart, and determined female leads.”

Your Place Or Mine centers on two long-distance best friends who change each other’s lives when one decides to pursue a lifelong dream and the other volunteers to keep an eye on the friend’s teenage son.

The Cactus is based on Haywood’s novel of the same name. It focuses on a woman’s unexpected pregnancy at 45 years old, causing her to rethink the structured life she has created for herself. She then goes on an unconventional journey toward love, family, and learning to embrace the unexpected.

Witherspoon will produce the projects through her Hello Sunshine company.

The streamer won the bidding race for the Ted Melfi-directed drama starring Melissa McCarthy. In addition to McCarthy, the film also stars Chris O’Dowd and Kevin Kline, and a large ensemble cast.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film follows a married couple that suffers a hardship, leading Jack (O’Dowd) to head off to deal with his grief while Lilly (McCarthy) remains in the “real” world, dealing with her own guilt. As if Lilly’s troubles weren’t bad enough, a starling bird that has nested in her backyard begins to harass and attack her and she becomes comically obsessed with killing it. Lilly eventually finds guidance from Larry (Kline), a quirky psychologist-turned-veterinarian with a troubled past of his own. The two form a unique and unlikely friendship as they each help the other to explore, acknowledge and confront their problems.

Melfi, who co-wrote, directed and produced Hidden Figures, has been developing another project for Netflix, Huck, based on a comic book by Mark Millar.

Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours To Kill will hit the streaming platform as soon as next month. Per Deadline, the special was filmed at the Beacon Theatre in New York and was part of his residency at the venue. 

23 Hours To Kill is Seinfeld’s second stand-up special for Netflix under his production deal with the streamer. His first special, Jerry Before Seinfeld, launched in 2017, the year the deal was inked and featured never-before-seen materials from his life.

The official teaser trailer features local reporter Tony, played by Ricky Gervais, exploring what comes next, that is what comes after his journey to find strength after dealing with his wife’s death in season one. As Tony continues to grieve for his late wife, he now faces a new problem: his local paper The Tambury Gazette is at risk of closure.

The original Netflix series was created, written, and directed by Gervais.

Netflix announced that the cast of the comedy series led by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin will get together for the event that will benefit the Meals on Wheels COVID-19 relief program.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the streaming giant has canceled two of its three IDW-produced drama series after both ran for one season only. Per the outlet, the decision likely follows an internal decision that a financial investment in another season will not be valuable.

V-Wars and October Faction join other recently canceled series including Messiah, AJ and the Queen, Spinning Out, Soundtrack, and Daybreak, which all ran for one season only on the streamer.

V-Wars and October Faction launched on December 5 and January 23, respectively.
