The festival’s director, Thierry Frémaux, announced the news in an official press release, and it was clear he couldn’t be more delighted to welcome Tarantino back.

“We were afraid the film would not be ready, as it wouldn’t be released until late July, but Quentin Tarantino, who has not left the editing room in four months, is a real, loyal and punctual child of Cannes,” said Frémaux.

This prestigious festival holds a special place in Tarantino’s heart, and it’s the most fitting spot for the world premiere of his latest film. After all, Cannes was the place where he won Palme d’Or for his cult classic Pulp Fiction exactly 25 years ago.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will also be a part of the main competition, but regular movie-goers will have to wait until July 26 to see it in the theaters. The star-studded cast of this epic includes the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has been described as the story of a faded TV actor and his stunt double, striving to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.

The two lead characters just happen to be next-door neighbors of Sharon Tate, a young actress who made headlines after she was killed in the Manson murders. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie will play the lead roles in this intriguing film, that’s been in the back of Tarantino’s mind for as long as he can remember.

“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A. and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore,” explained famous director.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Tarantino’s take on the Manson Family murders. Actress and model Sharon Tate was one of the victims of his notorious cult. She was married to director Roman Polanski and pregnant with their first child at the time of her murder.

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Tarantino’s decision to give this case  Hollywood treatment. Tate’s sister Debra wasn’t on board at first but gave her blessing after the famous director reached out to her.

“I’m pleased he reached out. I thought it showed a lot of class and sensitivity to move up the release date. He has done nothing but respects me and be very forthcoming. I have very high hopes for this project,” said Debra Tate.

DiCaprio will portray Rick Dalton, the former star of a Western TV series, while Pitt stars as Cliff Booth, Dalton’s longtime stunt double.

“Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore,” Tarantino shared. “But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor… Sharon Tate.”

“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was 7 years old,” Tarantino said in Sony’s release. “I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A., and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

The director has reportedly asked Oscar nominated actress Margot Robbie to play Tate, who was murdered by Charles Manson’s cult members. The actress and wife of director Roman Polanski was pregnant at the time she was killed.

The movie is set to release worldwide on August 9, 2019, which coincides with the 50^th anniversary of the day that the Family Manson committed the brutal murders of Tate and five of her friends.

Tarantino has previously worked with DiCaprio in Django Unchained, which earned five Oscar nominations. Pitt starred in Inglorious Basterds, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards.
