Sunday night (Feb 24) saw an audience of glamorous celebrities gather once more for the 91st Oscar Ceremony. For the first time in 30 years, the ceremony was to go ahead without a host and some of us suspected that the entire event would shape up to be one massive facepalm. Surprisingly, the ceremony was one of the most enjoyable in years.

After an energetic performance from Queen, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph opened the ceremony with a hilarious speech. Their one-liners were packed full of funny references and they wittily addressed the rumor that awards would be presented during ad breaks.

“We won’t be doing awards during the commercials, but we will be presenting commercials during the awards,” Poehler quipped. “So if all the winners could all say Hellman’s Mayonnaise: We’re on the side of food instead of their speeches, that would be great.”

The lack of host also left more room for a diverse host of presenters. From Serena Williams to Mike Myers, it was those presenting each category who shone the brightest. Of course, we have to give special mention to Melissa McCrthy and Brian Tyree Henry for their astounding costumes when they presented the award for Best Costume Design.

Other highlights include Olivia Colman’s Oscar win. Colman started out doing quirky British comedy series and once had a miniature role in Doctor Who and they actually spelled her name wrong in the credits. After her success in Peep Show and then her fantastic performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ movie The Lobster, Colman was ready to break into Hollywood.

And what better way to do it than with her astonishing performance in The Favourite? Even though we all saw it coming, Coleman was completely overwhelmed by her Oscar win and gave this endearingly charming speech:

Other highlights included Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s performance of “Shallow”, from A Star Is Born. Lady Gaga won an award for the song and became the first artists to win a Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAGA and Academy Award in a single year.

It was also wonderful to see Black Panther win in three categories and Spike Lee finally received his well-deserves Oscar. Rami Malek’s acceptance speech was brilliant and Netflix finally won the film industry’s respect with
Alfonso CuarĂłn’s Roma.

So yes, there was no host this year but to be honest, we’d be surprised if they bother having one again. The show ran smoothly and was filled with inclusivity and hilarious highlights. It was certainly the most enjoyable ceremony of the last few years.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA will not perform at the upcoming 2019 Oscars ceremony. The duo was supposed to perform their duet “All the Stars” from the movie Black Panther, which is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song but according to Variety, that won’t be the case due to “logistics and timing” issues. A source close to Academy also confirmed that the song won’t be performed by another act.

Written by Lamar, SZA, Sounwave, and Al Shux, “All the Stars” was released on January 4th, 2018, and served as a leading single for the soundtrack album of Black Panther. The track was a big success and picked up numerous nominations including a nomination for Best Original Song at the 76th Golden Globe Awards and four nominations at the 61st Grammy Awards.

The ceremony of the 91st Academy Awards, which will take place tonight, will still feature the performances of the four remaining Best Original Song nominees.

Gillian Welch and David Rowlings will perform “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs while Mary Poppins Returns‘ “The Place Where Lost Things Go” will be sung by Bette Midler and Marc Shaiman. Also, Jennifer Hudson will sing I’ll Fight from RBG while Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper will team up for their duet “Shallow” from A Star Is Born.

The decision that four categories were not going to be shown on TV has been reversed.

The hugely unpopular decision to relegate the awards for Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up and Hairstyling and Live Action Short to commercial breaks was reversed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The decision not to air these four categories live, but rather in edited form was followed by a major backlash from Hollywood A-listers and icons of the idustry including Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro and more.

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24,” an Academy statement said.

It seems this year’s Oscars has already seen its fair share of controversy, first with Kevin Hart who stepped down as host following the discovery of controversial old tweets. Luckily now it seems that common sense has prevailed.

The 91st Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, California. The awards will be handed out by a host of stars including Emilia Clarke, Gary Oldman, Brie Larson and many more.

The Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January, but A Star Is Born is already one of the front-runners. Warner Bros. bosses already started plotting its victory and submitted three of the songs from this hit musical for the consideration of the Academy.

Despite the fact that it’s not one of the main categories, Best Original Song is pretty important for movies such as this one. The heartfelt tunes from its chart-topping soundtrack pretty much carry the plot, and experts have been discussing their Oscar potential ever since the movie came out.

Warner Bros. narrowed the list down to three tracks and confirmed our suspicions by making a pretty obvious choice. “Shallow”, “Always Remember Us This Way” and “I’ll Never Love Again” will be campaigned for Best Original Song come Oscar time.

According to the Academy rules, only two songs per movie can be nominated in one calendar year, so it’s safe to say one of them won’t make the cut. Experts are predicting “Shallow” will certainly be on the list, and probably take the Oscar home, but nothing will be official until February 24.
