Multiple outlets report that the prolific director behind films such as Back to the Future is eyeing his next project, and it looks like Disney’s live-action Pinocchio could be it. 

Zemeckis is in early talks to direct the film, and should he join the project, he is set to take over from Paddington director, Paul King, who had originally been tapped to direct but exited the project at the beginning of the year.

Chris Weitz is also penning the live-action adaptation of the 1940 Disney classic about a living wooden puppet who must prove himself worthy to become a real boy. He will produce with Andrew Miano through their Depth of Field banner. David Heyman was also originally on board to produce but is also no longer involved with the project.

Pinocchio has officially entered Disney’s pipeline of film to be given the live-action adaptation treatment.

This project is based on Roald Dahl’s popular children’s novel, and tells the story of a young boy who stumbles onto a witch convention and must do everything in his power to stop them.

Guillermo del Toro previously expressed a desire to make a stop-motion film based on this book, but that never happened. Robert Zemeckis eventually jumped on board, and agreed to direct and write the script for this exciting project.

Rumor has it Anne Hathaway won’t be the only Oscar winner starring in The Witches. Viola Davis is reportedly circling the project, as well, but nothing is official just yet. Release date is also still a mystery.

This exciting project tells the story of King Kamehameha, the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He’s the one responsible of uniting the Hawaiian islands for the first time and making sure they remained a united realm.

This film will be Hollywood’s first attempt to bring his story to life. It was described as a sweeping historical epic based on the true story of Kamehameha, who fulfilled the prophecy that surrounded his fabled life since birth.

In addition to playing the lead, The Rock will also produce The King through Seven Bucks Productions. Johnson and his partners Dany and Hiram Garcia were the ones responsible for getting this project off the ground. They recruited Randall Wallace (Braveheart) to write the script, while The Rock was still in Hawaii filming Jumanji.

It’s not a coincidence that the Fast & Furious star was the one who landed this role. He wanted to portray this Hawaiian ruler since the early days of his acting career. The Rock believed that bringing Kamehameha’s story to life would be a good way to honor his Hawaiian heritage.
