“I wanted to relive, reevaluate and investigate the journeys that my parents and the first generation of West Indians went on to deliver me here today calling myself a black British person. What’s important about our stories is that they are local but at the same time global,” explained the 12 Years A Slave director in a statement.
Wright and Boyega aren’t the only actors cast in McQueen’s next project. Small Axe will also star Malachi Kirby (Roots), Shaun Parkes (Lost in Space), Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty), Alex Jennings (The Crown) and Jack Lowden (War & Peace).
The series is expected to premiere on BBC One next year, and Amazon already picked the US rights.

The riveting plot isn’t the only thing that makes Widows an absolute must-watch. Its star-studded cast is even more impressive, and it consists of more Hollywood big shots than anyone can count. Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and newcomer Cynthia Erivo will play the eponymous widows. This Oscar darling also stars Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya and Robert Duvall.
Steve McQueen, the director behind the Oscar-winning epic 12 Years a Slave, is helmer of the upcoming film. He co-wrote the script with Gillian Flynn, bestselling author of Gone Girl. You’ll have to wait for a few more months to see what these two creative masterminds came up with since Widows won’t premiere until November 16.
