Superman: Legacy is supposed to start filming this January in Atlanta, with DC co-president James Gunn serving as its director. It’s scheduled to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025.

His casting is yet to be officially confirmed, and Warner Bros. only kicked off the audition process after the SAG-AFTRA strike came to a close.

Despite the lengthy strikes in Hollywood throughout this year, James Gunn recently revealed that Superman: Legacy is still on track for its July 11, 2025 release date.

“Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career,” wrote Gunn on the social media platform Threads.

Gunn announced the news in the Twitter thread, where he shared details about this project, set to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025. Gunn revealed he was offered to direct a film about the iconic superhero years ago, but he initially said no because he didn’t feel he could give him the dignity he deserves.

He kept exploring ways to make Superman’s story unique, fun, and emotional and found what he was looking for when he decided to focus on his heritage. Gunn’s new Superman film will explore “how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

It was clear that Superman will look quite different after Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC and decided to let Henry Cavill go. He announced his exit back in December, just two months after saying he’ll be back as Superman, and credited “the changing of the guard” as the reason for his exit.
