The latest edition of the Toronto International Film Festival introduced us to some of the year’s most anticipated films, but none of them created a bigger splash than American Fiction. Cord Jefferson’s feature directorial debut walked away with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award.

Based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, American Fiction centers on Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an author and English literature professor who’s frustrated by the stereotypical representation of Black people in modern literature. He decides to write a satirical book embracing all the old tropes and clichés—only to watch it become an overnight bestseller.

In addition to Jeffrey Wright, this movie stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody. It was written and directed by Cord Jefferson, who made his feature directorial debut with this project.

People’s Choice Award is voted by the Toronto International Film Festival audience, and many of the previous winners found great success, either winning or getting nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. The list of recent recipients includes The Fabelmans, Belfast, Nomadland, and Jojo Rabbit.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival took place between September 7-17, and Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron were the first and second runners-up for the People’s Choice Award this year.

TIFF’s Primetime program is dedicated to blurring the lines between film and television by showcasing some of the visionary new shows. This year’s lineup was been unveiled, with All the Light We Cannot See and Expats leading the way with their world premieres in Toronto.

Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See will have its world premiere in Toronto before heading to Netflix in the fall. The same goes for Lulu Wang’s Amazon series Expats, starring Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yo.

The Primetime program line-up will also include Alice & Jack starring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson, the Israeli crime drama Bad Boy, and several Canadian projects, including comedy Bria Mack Gets a Life and docu-series Black Life: Untold Stories.

Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer, described this year’s Primetime program as “bigger than ever” and said it will give audiences “the exclusive and unmatched opportunity to celebrate the best new international series together, in cinema, on the big screen.”

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 7-17, with Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron making history as the first animated film to open the festival.

Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans created quite a splash at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and it wasn’t a shocker to see it take one of the top prizes home. This deeply personal drama collected TIFF’s prestigious People’s Choice Award.

Spielberg released an official statement thanking festival representatives and the audience for giving him this accolade. He said that the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made his first visit to TIFF intimate and personal to the entire Fabelman family.

The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical film, inspired by the famed director’s childhood as a young aspiring filmmaker. Gabriel LaBelle plays the lead role, while the rest of the cast includes Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch.

The film’s big win in Toronto marks the start of its race for the Oscar because many of the previous winners of the People’s Choice Award went on to win the best picture, most recently Green Book and Nomadland.

The 2022 Toronto International Film Festival took place between September 8 and 18. Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery were first and second runner-ups for the People’s Choice Award. The Midnight Madness award went to Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, while Black Ice was named the best documentary.

Another Toronto Film Festival is behind us, and the movie lovers attending this event picked the movie that impressed them the most. Taika Waititi’s historical satire Jojo Rabbit picked up the People’s Choice Award, becoming one of the front-runners in the upcoming Oscar race.

The winner of this award is picked by the public, who place their ticket stubs in voting boxes after each screening, rating the movie they’ve just seen. Despite the fact the voting body is not the same at the Oscars, winners of the main TIFF award often end up scoring nominations and wins in the best picture category.

We’re yet to see if Jojo Rabbit goes down the same road, but it’s not the only Oscar hopeful that was screened in Toronto. The list of critically acclaimed movies shown at this festival also includes films Hustlers, Joker, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story which was the first runner-up for People’s Choice Award.

Jojo Rabbit received the top award at this festival despite mixed reviews, and we’re yet to see how it does at the box office. It’s set to screen at the film festivals in Vancouver, London, and San Diego before making its way to theaters on October 18th.

Toronto International Film Festival just wrapped up, and it gave us several promising movies that could snatch the Academy Award in February. Green Book joined the search for the next Oscar front-runner after winning the People’s Choice Award at the prestigious festival.

This feel-good buddy dramedy tells the story of classical pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his driver Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), who accompanies him on a tour in the Deep South during the ‘60s.

This promising project will hit theaters on November 21, and its victory in Toronto is a huge deal. Winners of People’s Choice Award have been part of the Oscar race on numerous occasions in the past and even scooped Best Picture several times. 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire are some of the films to score both awards.

People’s Choice Awards are voted on by TIFF attendees, who vote online or by placing their ticket stubs in a box at the theater. Green Book won them over this year, but it wasn’t the only movie they fell in love with. If Beale Street Could Talk by Barry Jenkins was the first runner-up, and it was followed by Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma.

Even though The Weinstein Co. claims “business as usual,” the film The Current War starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison has been shelved.

While official statements report that the company is not at risk of shutdown, Deadline reports that it did push back this project’s planned release date of November 24 to an undisclosed time in 2018.

The film centers on the race between Edison and George Westinghouse, played by Michael Shannon, to create a sustainable electricity system for America in the 19th century.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to unenthusiastic reviews. The shift came after The Current War screenwriter Michael Mitnick dropped out of a New York Film Festival panel on Thursday reportedly saying that he finds it inappropriate to promote the film at this time.

What the future holds for The Weinstein Co. is unknown. However, in a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Weinstein said “there is a plan” to maintain The Weinstein Co., though likely with a less “familial” name.

Lady Gaga is postponing the European leg of her Joanne world tour, which was kicked off in Vancouver on August 1, due to sever physical pain.

31-year-old Gaga took to social media tweeting that she believes in honesty when it comes to her mental and physical struggles.

“It is complicated and difficult to explain, and we are trying to figure it out. As I get stronger and when I feel ready, I will tell my story in more depth, and plan to take this on strongly so I can not only raise awareness, but expand research for others who suffer as I do, so I can help make a difference.”

“I’m a fighter,” Gaga continued. “I use the word suffer not only because trauma and chronic pain have changed my life, but because they are keeping me from living a normal life.”

“They are also keeping me from what I love the most in the world: performing for my fans. I am looking forward to touring again soon, but I have to be with my doctors right now so I can be strong and perform for you all for the next 60 years or more. I love you so much,” Gaga added.

The 6 week European leg of the tour was scheduled to begin September 21 in Barcelona, Spain and conclude on October 28 in Cologne, Germany. An official press release also confirmed the postponement of the European leg, to early 2018.

This cancellation comes after Gaga canceled her performance at the annual Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil, also due to severe pain. Then the singer took to Instagram, promising to her fans that she will be back to perform in Brazil soon.

Just recently the singer confirmed on Twitter that she suffers from fibromyalgia. Gaga has been open about her chronic pain in the past, a candidness which carried over to her new documentary: Gaga: Five Foot Two. The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before debuting on Netflix on September 22.

A decade after the last big-screen adaptation of an Ian McEwan novel, Atonement, several of his works are currently in post-production. The first to premiere will be The Children Act, based on the author’s 2014 novel. The movie’s screenplay was written by McEwan himself and it will be directed by Richard Eyre.

It is story of a High Court judge, played by Emma Thompson, in Great Britain who must decide the fate of a 17-year-old boy sick with leukemia, played by Dunkirk star Fionn Whitehead. This gets even more complicated as the young boy’s religious beliefs prevents him from receiving life-saving blood transfusion. The plot centers on the two’s unique relationship, forged as the judge must come to a decision.

Thompson’s participation in the production was crucial to producer Duncan Kenworthy, who told EW that the movie would not have gone forward without her. “She’s in every scene and is absolutely amazing. I’ve worked with Emma before, so I know just how heart-stoppingly good she is at hiding deep emotion and then suddenly and unexpectedly revealing it.”

Kenworthy’s admiration for Thompson was also shared by Whitehead. To this day, Thompson is still the only person to have won Oscars for both acting (1992’s Howards End) and screenwriting (1995’s Sense and Sensibility).

The Children Act premieres next month at the Toronto International Film Festival. A release date has yet to me announced.

Exciting news for Louis C.K. fans! It was announced on Tuesday that the comedian and filmmaker will debut his first feature film in 16 years in the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

The last feature film directed by C.K. was the 2001 Pootie Tang. Since then, he directed numerous TV episodes and stand-up comedy specials, however, he never returned to filmmaking. C.K. was somewhat undecided about the experience of filmmaking, saying in 2004 that it made him “happy that a world [he] created and wrote and shot made people happy and then lived on. After all, there aren’t many other movies from that year that people still want to see now.” However, in 2012, he said that film was a “huge mistake,” adding that “the experience was very painful, I was sucking at making the movie and got fired off of it, and they put my name on it anyway.”

I Love You, Daddy was filmed under the strictest secrecy. According to the Los Angeles Times, C.K. who also stars in the movie, will play “Glen Topher, a successful television producer and writer.” Also starring in the movie are Chloe Grace Moretz, John Malkovich, Helen Hunt, Rose Byrne, and Pamela Aldon.
