Adaptations of Broadway musicals are all the rage in Hollywood these days, and another one is on the way. The new version of The Color Purple is coming to the theaters this Christmas, and Warner Bros. just dropped the first official trailer for this highly-anticipated adaptation.

The Color Purple draws inspiration from Alice Walker’s iconic novel of the same name, and it chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Black Southern woman Celie Harris Johnson over the course of four decades, as she struggles to find her identity after a number of hardships that changed her forever.

Walker’s book served as inspiration for the Broadway musical of the same name, which ran from 2005 to 2008 and received 11 Tony nods before being revived again in 2015. The American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino, who briefly played Celie in the original Broadway production, landed the lead role in the movie adaptation.

The Color Purple will also star Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Coleman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., and David Alan Grier. Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Quincy Jones will produce the project, while Blitz Bazawule was in charge of directing it.
