Andre Braugher, the star of Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away at 61. The two-time Emmy winner starred in over 60 projects over the course of the past three decades, and left an impressive legacy behind him, as both comedic and dramatic actor.

After making his acting debut in the 1989 film Glory alongside Denzel Washington, Braugher went on to star as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street. This NBC drama put him on the map and won him his first Emmy Award.

He later appeared in TV shows Gideon’s Crossing, Hack, Thief, and Men of a Certain Age and kicked off a fun new chapter of his career with the role of Captain Raymond Holt on the police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur released a statement alongside the show’s executive producers following Braugher’s passing and said that the happiness and joy he brought to those around him were even greater than his acting talent.

“Like everyone who was fortunate enough to know Andre, we are heartbroken by the news of his passing. He was one of the most talented dramatic actors in history, and then he decided to try comedy, and he was instantly one of the funniest people ever to do it,” they said in a statement.

Braugher played his last film role in the acclaimed drama She Said, while his final series The Residence remains unfinished due to a strike-related shutdown.
