George A. Romero, best known for his cult film Night of the Living Dead, has died on July 16 aged 77.
Romero’s family shared a statement explaining he has died after “a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer”.
Unintentionally, his movie Night of the Living Dead became a racial piece instead of simply a horror. Released in 1968, with an African-American leading actor, it inevitably raised some questions. Romero even admitted later that he thinks that was partially why the movie became so popular.
He proceeded with the Dead series, filming Dawn of the Dead in 1979 and Day of the Dead in 1985.
