Martin Freeman, Imelda Staunton to Star in “A Confession”

Sherlock’s Martin Freeman has been tapped to star in ITV’s crime drama A Confession.

The true-story drama from writer Jeff Pope tells the story of a detective who breached police procedure to catch a killer. The six-part drama was unveiled Monday by ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill and will be co-produced by ITV Studios and Urban Myth Films.

The Emmy and BAFTA-winning actor is joined by Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning actress Imelda Staunton.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, A Confession is based on the real-life event of the disappearance of a 22-year-old girl in March 2011 and will follow Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who deliberately breached police procedure and protocol to catch a killer, a decision that ultimately cost him his career and reputation.

“I found this is a fascinating story to tell on a number of levels,” said Pope “On one hand it is a brilliant piece of detective work, but in order to find both girls Fulcher felt he had to deny Halliwell his rights as a suspect. It brings into question how we want our police to behave when someone goes missing. Should Fulcher have been praised as a courageous officer fighting for the life of a girl, or lose his career for riding roughshod over the law?”

A Confession is expected to air on ITV in 2019.
