Michelle Kwan’s Husband Clay Pell Filed For Divorce

Olympic ice skating champ Michelle Kwan and Clay Pell is over.

Her husband filed for divorce on Monday, ending their 4-year marriage. The pair has no children. Pell cites irreconcilable differences, according to legal docs.

“It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle and my marriage is coming to an end,” Pell said in a statement on Wednesday. “This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family. I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction. I want to thank friends and family who have given wisdom and support, and I ask for privacy during this challenging time.”

The couple tied the knot in January 2013 at a church in Providence, Rhode Island in front of family and friends, including Kwan’s fellow Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Dick Button, Dorothy Hamill and Peter Oppegard. The 5-time world champ figure skater wore an ivory Vera Wang gown while Pell sported his military uniform.

Pell is a lawyer, a JAG and lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard Reserve and former White House National Security staffer under President Obama. He also ran for Governor of Rhode Island but was unsuccessful.

The two have not commented on their divorce. Michelle is fresh from her vacation in Palm Springs, California over the weekend, where she attended the wedding of her brother Ron Kwan.

She recently appeared on ESPN’s coverage of 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. And it appears she did not wear a wedding ring during the trip.
