]]>Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, said they’re “honored to shine a proper light upon these works of art that lift us up and, ultimately, lead us to empathy” as the world continues to navigate difficult times.
He added they’re proud to gather this community of artists together to celebrate their extraordinary contributions in a private ceremony that will take place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills on January 12, 2024.
Oppenheimer and Barbie, two films that found groundbreaking success at the summer box office after sparking the global phenomenon known as Barbenheimer, will be two of the films acknowledged by AFI, along with Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, and Poor Things.
When it comes to the television field, Emmy front-runners Succession and The Bear are among this year’s honorees. The list also includes several rookie shows that knocked us off our feet with their first seasons, including Beef, Jury Duty, The Last of Us, and Poker Face.

]]>When it comes to movies, AFI’s list includes everything from the major studio spectacles to box office blockbusters, with the glaring absence of streaming services. They only made it to the TV categories, with such shows as Mo and Severance making the cut.
AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said they wanted to shine a light on the power of storytelling with this list, adding that it’s particularly meaningful to celebrate the community of artists this year when they have lifted our spirits through the most challenging of times.
AFI Awards usually include some of the biggest Oscar hopefuls and many of the films that made the cut went on to be nominated or even win the Academy Award for best picture – most recently CODA and Nomadland.
AFI Awards winners will pick up their awards at the private luncheon, taking place at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills on January 13, 2023.

]]>Their annual list of the best movies of the year features several Oscar front-runners, including A Star is Born, Green Book and The Favourite. Several genre films that don’t have a promising future with the Academy also made the cut. Black Panther is the most notable example and people are really rooting for this Marvel smash-hit.
Alfonso Cuarón’s critically acclaimed drama Roma was honored with a special award, designated for a work of excellence outside AFI’s criteria for American film.
When it comes to TV categories, the institute went with a couple of pretty refreshing choices and made room for several new shows that deserve a larger audience. They included rookie series Barry, Pose and the Emmy-winning comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

]]>Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, described Washington as an American icon and said their organization is proud to present him with this award.
“As an actor, he stands tall as a heroic, stoic embodiment of the best in all of us, and he does so with heart, humanity and one of the brightest smiles to ever light up the screen. Equally formidable as director and producer, he is a creative force to be reckoned with — and one of the most vital, relevant artists working today,” explained Stringer.
AFI Life Achievement Award was established in 1973, and it’s been given to recipients whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art ever since. Denzel Washington is definitely one of those people, and this is not even the first honor of this caliber that he received. Two-time Oscar winner previously collected Cecil B. DeMille Award at Golden Globe ceremony in 2016.
