“As distribution chiefs, we’re not often rendered speechless by a film’s performance, but Barbillion has blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water… Long lines and repeat viewings prove that movies are back in a big, big way,” said the duo in a statement.

Greta Gerwig’s latest directorial effort set several major records with these impressive numbers. In addition to scoring the highest debut for a film in 2023, Barbie also had the highest-grossing weekend for a female-directed film and the highest-grossing weekend for a non-sequel, non-remake, and non-superhero movie.

Barbie’s numbers are quite impressive given its tough competition in the theaters this weekend. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer premiered on the same day, and the tonal difference between the two films inspired the Barbenheimer trend. Following these ominous words, the camera pans to a giant Barbie, replacing the monolith from Kubrick’s early-man sequence. The girls who were shown playing with baby dolls in earlier scenes, smash them in slow motion after being wowed by Barbie, who winks at the camera at the end of the trailer.

We then get to see several scenes from the movie itself that don’t reveal much of the movie’s plot but give us a look at Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, and Simu Liu in character. The supporting cast also includes Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and Hari Nef, among others.

According to Deadline, Gosling initially turned down the role due to his busy schedule, but he changed his tune after pre-production dragged out. Warner Bros. insisted that he’s their only choice for the role, and the Oscar-nominated actor agreed to sign on after his schedule cleared up.

Barbie has been in development since 2018 when Margot Robbie was first attached to the project as a potential lead. After closing the deal with the Suicide Squad star, Mattel started looking for a potential director and found a perfect partner in crime in Greta Gerwig. She’s also set to write a script for this project alongside Noah Baumbach.

We haven’t seen Gosling take on any lead roles since he portrayed Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s biopic First Man back in 2018. He’s set to make a comeback in the action thriller The Gray Man by the Russo brothers, in addition to being attached to the remake of horror classic Wolfman and crime drama The Actor.

Margot Robbie is currently the only actress attached to the project. Robbie Brenner, the executive producer of Mattel Films, said it’s extremely important to them to make this movie as diverse as possible.

“For us, the Barbie movie should definitely have a message of female empowerment, and that you can dream and be anything you want. I do think it’s important to push the boundaries and push the limits. And I think people are really ready to see something different,” said Brenner during Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference.
