It only took five days for Moana 2 to gross $221 million in North America and $165.3 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $386.3 million. Sky seems to be the limit for this film, after it managed to score the highest five-day domestic opening of all time surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $204.6 million.

Moana 2 hit the theaters just in time for Thanksgiving and broke countless records associated with this holiday. It earned more money than any other movie on Thanksgiving with $28 million, in addition to scoring the highest Thanksgiving debut and weekend. All these records were previously held by another hit Disney sequel—Frozen 2.

Moana 2 sees the titular heroine embarking on the journey to the far seas of Oceania after receiving an unexpected call from her ancestors. Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson lead the film’s voice cast, which also includes Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk.

Written and directed by Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine will chronicle the trials and tribulations of the MMA legend Mark Kerr. He rose to prominence during the no-holds-barred era of the UFC but struggled to continue his domination while grappling with addiction, winning, love, and friendship.

Blunt will portray Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples, who’s not quite sure where she fits within his chaotic and contradictory world. Johnson will also produce this project through Seven Bucks Productions in addition to playing the lead role, while the rest of the cast is yet to be announced.

This will mark the second collaboration between Blunt and Johnson, who previously led Disney’s Jungle Cruise in 2021. They’re attached to the sequel of this fantasy adventure film, which is still in the early stages of development.

Blunt most recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress. She’ll next be seen in David Leitch’s action comedy The Fall Guy alongside Ryan Gosling.

Johnson has been eying the role in this project ever since his company Seven Bucks Productions acquired the rights in 2019. The Smashing Machine finally started taking shape when Benny Safdie came on board as its director, along with the acclaimed indie studio A24.

Safdie previously collaborated with A24 on his breakout film Uncut Gems with his brother Josh. Noah Sacco, the company’s head of film, said he’s looking forward to their next collaboration and added they’re deeply honored to have Johnson and Safdie bring this incredibly special project to life.

Johnson and his Seven Bucks’s production partner Dany Garcia are also executive producing the project, along with Eli Bush, David Koplan, and Safdie through Out for the Count.

The two-time UFC heavyweight champion has been previously the subject of an HBO documentary of the same name, which chronicled his addiction to painkillers and the “no holds barred” aspect of early MMA competitions.

Johnson announced the upcoming live-action adaptation by tuning in via a pre-recorded message from Hawaii during Disney’s recent annual shareholder meeting, confirming his return as Maui.

“I wear our culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me,” wrote the actor on Instagram.

Johnson will executive produce this project alongside Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original film. She said she’s looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way, after seeing the profound impact Moana had on how we think of Disney princesses.

The original Moana film came out in 2016, and it showed the journey of self-discovery and reflection of the strong-willed young woman who strikes a friendship with an exiled demigod named Maui. The film was a commercial success, with $645 million grossed worldwide, and it was nominated for two Oscars.

The journey takes intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt) from London to the Amazon jungle to find an ancient tree with healing abilities that could change modern medicine forever, as long as it doesn’t end up in the wrong hands. Along the way, she recruits skipper Frank Wolff (Johnson) to pilot her through the jungle on his ramshackle riverboat.

Frank tells her that he’s been trying to find this same tree for a while now, but that it doesn’t exist. During their journey, the two will have to overcome animal and human threats that want to kill them.

Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti will also star in the film.

DeVito will star in the follow-up to the acclaimed feature alongside returning ensemble including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black. 

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle directed by Jake Kasdan was a huge hit, grossing $962 million worldwide. 

While details of DeVito’s character are kept tightly under wraps Johnson did say that, “The magic of Jumanji is who becomes who. And the idea of Danny DeVito joining our cast was too irresistible and something we knew we wanted to deliver to our audience this upcoming Christmas. Dwanta Claus loves everyone.”

News of Devito’s casting comes just a day after it was confirmed that Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina is in final negotiations to star in the film.

Dwayne Johnson took to social media and shared a first sneak peek at his high-speed high-action spinoff. 

The snap is of Johnson and his co-star Jason Statham, who will star as the law enforcement dynamo and former agent of the Diplomatic Security Service Luke Hobbs and assassin Deckard Shaw respectively.
