HBO is plotting several spin-offs of their hit show Game of Thrones, and it turns out some of them will be animated. George R.R. Martin recently shared an update with fans on his blog and revealed he’s plotting three animated spin-offs with HBO, starting with Nine Voyages.

Martin marked the end of 2023 by telling fans what he’s been up to recently in a lengthy blog post and dropped several hints about the future of the Game of Thrones franchise. He revealed there are three animated projects underway, but added none of them have been greenlit yet.

Nine Voyages, which centers on the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, is one of those projects because “budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive”, according to Martin.

“We have moved Nine Voyages, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live-action to animation. A move I support fully… There’s a whole world out there.  And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation,” he wrote on his blog.

Game of Thrones produced one spin-off so far – the live-action prequel House of the Dragon, but Martin dropped hints about several potential spin-offs over the years, including Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships.

Author and executive producer George R.R. Martin offers some new information about HBO’s forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel series.

The pilot from Jane Goldman is currently filming in Northern Ireland. We already know that the show takes place roughly 5,000 years before the events in Game of Thrones and chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes to the rise of the White Walkers and the near-destruction of man.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin revealed that fans should expect to see some favorite characters in the prequel, but not others.

“The Starks will definitely be there,” he said. “Obviously the White Walkers are here — or as they’re called in my books, ‘The Others’ — and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths.”

“The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar,” he said. “It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones.”

The prequel’s title is still under wraps.

Game of Thrones is ending, but we are not leaving Westeros in its entirety.

A prequel to the HBO series, helmed by Jane Goldman of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is already in the works but even more spin-offs are reportedly in production…

Author of A Song of Ice and Fire, on which the series is based, George R. R. Martin, has revealed on his blog that there are two more related shows which are coming along well.

“The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year,” he wrote in reference to Goldman’s project. “And two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer.”

Goldman’s prequel — which is being written by herself and Martin — will be set thousands of years before the events we are witnessing in Game of Thrones and has already added Naomi Watts, Miranda Richardson, and Jamie Campbell Bower to its cast.

Martin also hinted that one of the successor shows, as he calls them, will feature a Targaryen setting, telling fans to “pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.”

Not only winter is coming.

The still untitled Game of Thrones prequel expands its cast with five new series regulars.

Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx will star in the drama pilot from George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman. They join previously announced Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, and Miranda Richardson.

Here’s the official logline: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Back in November, Martin told Entertainment Tonight, “Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

Production is set to start this summer.

Space drama Nightflyers has been canceled at Syfy after just one season. The news about the cancelation was reported by several media outlets with Deadline getting the confirmation from one of the network’s representatives.

Based on the 1980’s novella from George R.R. Martin, Nightflyers premiered on December 2nd, 2018. The series revolved around a team of scientists who decide to embark on a space journey in order to make contact with aliens. Things took an unexpected turn, however, when they discover that other life forms are already on their ship and that they are not too friendly.

Cast members include Eoin Macken, Ajala, Gretchen Mol, Jodie Turner-Smith, Angus Sampson, and Maya Eshet.

While Nightflyers was conceived as multi-season story, and was one of Syfy’s most expensive projects, the network decided not to order more episodes due to low ratings. The premiere attracted 623,000 viewers, with that number dropping to 420,000 for the finale of season one. The series also didn’t do great with the critics, who gave it mixed reviews.

Game of Thrones may be ending after Season 8, but George R.R. Martin will still be around. His book series Wild Cards is getting not one, but two adaptation at Hulu!

The streaming service behind hit shows The Handmaid’s Tale and Castle Rock is currently developing two shows set in the universe Martin created. Martin will serve as executive producer alongside Andrew Miller, who’s set to write both projects.

Wild Cards is set in an alternate post-World War II United States after a deathly virus wiped out 90% of those it infected by it. The majority of survivors transformed into grotesque physical versions of themselves, while a small percentage ended up developing superpowers in the process.

Wild Cards has been around since 1987, and over 40 authors contributed to the expansion of this fictional universe over the course of the last few decades. George R.R. Martin was the one who came up with the original idea, during the time he served as game master for the role-playing game Superworld.

If you appreciate George R.R. Martin’s series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire more than its TV adaptation Game of Thrones, then we have some bad news for you. The sixth book in the series, titled The Winds of Winter, won’t be coming out soon since Martin is having difficulties with writing it.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 70-year-old author talked about the current status of The Winds of Winter, which was announced in 2011, and admitted that he is “struggling” with finishing the novel.

“I’ve been struggling with it for a few years,” Martin explained. “‘The Winds of Winter’ is not so much a novel as a dozen novels, each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players and antagonists and allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together in an extremely complex fashion. So it’s very, very challenging.”

After the fifth GoT book was published in 2011, George R.R. Martin said that it would take him “three years to finish the next one at a good pace” alluding to The Winds of Winter. Since then, Martin gave occasional updates about the progress of the book but declined to give a timeline. As it stands now, the novel won’t be out at least before 2019.

HBO’s TV show Game of Thrones, on the other hands, is close to wrapping up since the eighth and final season will be aired in the first half of 2019.
