Hacks centers on a fading Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who must work with a young down-on-her-luck comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) to rejuvenate her act. Season 4 will see tensions rise between the two of them as they try to get their late-night show up and running.
In addition to Smart and Einbinder, the fourth season of Hacks will also mark the return of Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, Dan Bucatinsky, Helen Hunt, Tony Goldwyn, Kaitlin Olson, Jane Adams, Lauren Weedman, Christopher McDonald, and Poppy Liu.
They’ll be joined by several newcomers, including guest stars Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman, Eric Balfour, Danny Jolles, Gavin Matts, Grover Whitmore III, Holmes, Jasmine Ashanti, Katy Sullivan, Matt Oberg, and Sandy Honig.
Hacks premiered on Max back in 2021, and it won the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series for its latest season, in addition to three acting awards for Smart. Its fourth season will return to Max on April 10, and it will feature ten brand-new episodes.
Shōgun came into this year’s Emmys with a total of 25 nods, including eight in the major categories. It collected 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards a week prior, breaking the record previously held by John Adams, before winning four more awards at the main event for a total of 18.
Shōgun defeated The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem to be named the outstanding drama series. Its leading duo Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won acting awards for their respective performances, while Frederick E. O. Toye collected the trophy for best directing for a drama series.
When it comes to the comedy field, it was a tight race between The Bear and Hacks. The Bear managed to win four awards for 11 overall – most wins for a comedy series in a single year – but it lost the coveted outstanding comedy series award to Hacks.
Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer also walked away with four major awards, including outstanding limited or anthology series, outstanding writing, plus acting awards for its main duo Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning.
The 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 15, with Eugene Levy and Dan Levy hosting the show.

Its stars Josh O’Connor, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Gillian Anderson collected acting awards in their respective categories, while the show itself won awards for outstanding drama series, outstanding directing, and outstanding writing for a drama series.
Ted Lasso also had an impressive showing in the comedy field and won the award for outstanding comedy series. Its stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, and Brett Goldstein were awarded acting Emmys for their performances on the show. HBO Max series Hacks was right behind with three awards, including the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Jean Smart.
Mare of Easttown was the big winner of the night when it comes to limited series, and its stars Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson walked away with acting awards. This series, however, missed out on the award for outstanding limited or anthology series, which went to The Queen’s Gambit.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 19th, with Cedric the Entertainer serving as the host.
