Superman in the new film has been described as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned”, and we’ll get to see him trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas.

David Corenswet is gearing up to lead this film, and the first-look photo shows him putting on his suit, while a giant pink beam flies over the night sky, threatening to destroy the city. Gunn first shared the photo on the social media platform Threads and wrote, “The above photo was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”

Superman is scheduled to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025, and its cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

James Gunn has been tapped to pen the Suicide Sequel, just months after he was fired from Disney. Expectations are high as the first installment of the Warner Bros. and DC franchise was not received well by the critics. 

Disney fired the 52-year-old filmmaker after a series of offensive tweets he had written a decade prior resurfaced. The tweets made offensive jokes and Gunn, who had the support of almost the entire Guardians cast was let go by Disney. Following that, production on the Marvel sequel was put on hold indefinitely. 

“Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today,” he wrote apologetically. “Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.”

Gunn is also in talks to direct the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter crew members are being dismissed and are free to look for new work.

While there are conflicting reports from sources close to the production whether the hold is temporary or not, James Gunn’s firing from Disney from his post at Marvel means that production of the third installment has been put on hold indefinitely. 

Gunn, who teased that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to premiere sometime after Avengers 4, was let go by Disney. The company announced that it has “severed [its] business relationship” with Gunn following the unearthing of offensive tweets. 

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” Walt Disney Company Chairman Alan Horn said in a statement a couple of months ago.

Even though Disney has never set a release date for the feature, sources added that “The timeline has been pushed out.”

In regards to the questions what will this Starsky & Hutch be in relation to the original he wrote, “this would NOT be a reboot or a remake, but a continuation of the original series that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way.”  Gunn finished his announcement by telling current and future fans, “yes, I AM working on Starsky & Hutch for Amazon: I couldn’t be more excited, and I can’t wait for you guys to see what we come up with. Striped Tomato forever! Stay tuned!”

The original Starsky & Hutch premiered in 1975 on ABC and ran for 92 episodes until 1979. It was produced by Aaron Spelling. The show told the story of two L.A police officers played by David Soul and Paul Michael. The two from Southern California, who were opposites when it came to personal experience and personality, are most memorable when chasing bad guys in their iconic red and white-striped Ford Gran Torino.
