The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the first female Time Lord will be returning for the upcoming 12th season. Whittaker told the outlet exclusively, “I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again. It’s such an incredible role. It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and I’m not quite ready to hand it over yet.”

While the BBC hasn’t officially confirmed who is playing the Doctor in the upcoming season, it was largely presumed that the 26-year-old isn’t going anywhere.

Whittaker earned widespread praise for her work on Doctor Who, especially her portrayal of the first female Doctor in the show’s 55-year history. According to the outlet, the season 11 premiere garnered ratings of 10.9 million in the UK, making it the biggest season launch for the show.

Season 12 is expected to start shooting in early 2019.

Small, but vocal group expressed their disdain after Broadchurch star became the first woman to ever play the titular role. “This is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one,” said Whittaker.

The three new companions can be seen going about their everyday lives before the new Doctor enchants them with her time-twisting magic. Chibnall told EW: “[t]here were these three stories. I wouldn’t want to do repeated versions of these crimes. I don’t think that would ring true to me. So, at the moment, I don’t think I have another story for this world and I’m not sure that will change, really. So, I think it’s probably goodbye for good.”

When asked why he won’t take Broadchurch abroad, he said that many have suggested that in the past. “I think wherever David Tennant and Olivia Colman might wish to spend a few months of their year… Yeah, Hawaii could be good.
