Challengers topped the box office with $15 million grossed domestically, during a particularly slow week in North America. It also earned $10 million overseas.

These numbers are pretty impressive considering it’s an original film with an R-rating, and its star and producer Zendaya is hoping its success will inspire studios to give more original titles a wide release.

“We need to make more movies like this. It’s kind of scary because this is an original screenplay and those can be difficult to get people out to see. I hope that we can continue to have more variety (in Hollywood) and get people engaged with different kinds of films,” she told US Today.

Based on Camille DeAngelis’s novel of the same name, Bones and All centers on two young people embarking on a long odyssey across Reagan’s America. Chalamet plays an intense drifter Lee, while Taylor Russell takes on the role of a young woman living on the margins of society named Maren.

In an official statement discussing this project, Guadagnino said he’s always been drawn toward and touched by people living on the margins of society, and Bones and All allowed him to dive into their emotional state.

“I love these characters. The heart of the movie is tender and affectionate towards them. I’m interested in their emotional journeys. I want to see where the possibilities lie for them, enmeshed within the impossibility they face,” the acclaimed director explained.

The supporting cast of Bones and All includes Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, David Gordon-Green, Jessica Harper, and Mark Rylance. This project will hit the theatres on November 23, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September.

According to Guadagnino, he acquired the theatrical rights to Blood on the Tracks and asked Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King, The Bridges of Madison County) to write the script. LaGravenese said yes, and produced 188-pages worth screenplay which “follows characters through a multiyear story, set in the seventies, that he and Guadagnino had invented, drawing on the album’s central themes.”

While further details of the movie are currently being held under wraps, LaGravenese did reveal a few bits about its characters.

“When they’re repressing, we dramatize the repression, and what that does to them,” says LaGravenese. “And we dramatize what happens when you let your passions take over too much.”

Blood on the Tracks was Bob Dylan’s 15th studio album and was recorded during a turbulent period in Dylan’s personal life, which included estrangement from his then-wife Sara. Because of this, most critics interpreted the songs from the record as autobiographical, although Dylan denied this several times and claimed that he got the inspiration from short stories of Anton Chekhov.

While the album initially received mixed reviews from the critics, it went on to be considered one of Bob Dylan’s finest works and being labeled as “the truest, most honest account of a love affair from tip to stern ever put down on magnetic tape.”
