Madonna teased her next tour in a star-studded video, inspired by her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare. Diplo, Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Eric André, and Amy Schumer were some of the stars who joined her for the announcement, and they’ll make special appearances during the tour, along with the opening act Bob the Drag Queen.

In the tour’s official announcement, Madonna described it as an “artistic journey through four decades” largely inspired by the city of New York, adding she’s excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give her fans the show they have been waiting for.

The first concert of Madonna’s Celebration Tour will take place on July 15 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The North American leg of the tour will include stops in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, while the European leg will kick off on October 14 with a concert at London’s The O2 Arena.

The Material Girl says that she’s been “plagued” by injuries, which means she was forced to cancel yet another concert on her Madame X Tour. 

The pop star shared the news via a statement released Saturday. 

“I am deeply sorry that I have to cancel my concert scheduled for Monday, January 27th in London. Under doctors’ guidance I have been told to rest for a few days,” she shared. 

She continued: “As you all know, I have injuries that have plagued me since the beginning of the tour but I must always listen to my body and put my health first. The last thing I want to do is disappoint my fans or compromise the integrity of my show.”

Madonna added that despite the cancellation, she plans for the show scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, to go on as planned.

The cancellation of the London performance, follow’s Madonna’s cancellation of her concert in Lisbon, Portugal earlier this week.

The pop icon took to Instagram Wednesday to ask her fans for forgiveness for the “unexpected turn of events.”

She continued: “Doing my show every night brings me so much joy and to cancel is a kind of punishment for me but the pain I’m in right now is overwhelming and I must rest and follow doctors orders so I can come back stronger and better and continue the Madame journey with all of you.”

The nixed dates ran November 30-December 2 at Boston’s Boch Center Wang Theater.

The Madame X Tour will continue December 7 in Philadelphia.

The iconic singer has decided to push back the first few dates of the tour because “Madame X is a perfectionist.”

According to a representative from Live Nation, the opening performances were delayed due to “highly specialized production elements being delayed.”

“Madame X is a perfectionist and wants to give you the most unique, magical, and musical experience,” Madonna added in a statement. “She underestimated the amount of time it would take to bring this kind of intimate theatrical experience to you and wants it to be perfect!!! Thank you so much for your understanding.”

According to Variety, the tour will now start on Tuesday, September 17 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, NY.

The pop icon has landed her ninth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. 

Billboard reports that Madonna’s Madame X has landed the No. 1 opening with 95,000 equivalent album units earned in the US in the week ending June 20 with 90,000 of those in album sales. The album was released via Interscope Records on June 14.

The last time Madonna landed the No. 1 spot on the chart was in 2012, with MDNA. Madonna’s other No. 1 albums include: Hard Candy (2008); Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005); American Life (2003); Music (2000); Like a Prayer (1989); True Blue (1986); and Like a Virgin (1985).

Madonna’s No. 1 titles are only second to Barbara Streisand’s who has landed atop 11 times. The Beatles lead the general pack with 19, followed by Jay-Z with 14, Streisand and Bruce Springsteen both with 11 and Elvis Presley with 10. Eminem, Garth Brooks, Madonna and The Rolling Stones all tie with nine.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week.

The album opens with Madonna’s collaboration with Maluma, “Medellín.” She seductively whispers “cha cha cha” and then sings in a muddle of accents and languages. The track is OK, but it seems to suggest that Madonna’s hit-making days are over.

In the subsequent track “Dark Ballet”, we get a glimpse of an early Madonna. After all, Madonna reached icon status not by playing it safe, but by pushing boundaries and celebrating individuality. On the track, she sings: “I can dress like a boy, I can dress like a girl / Keep your beautiful words, ’cause I’m not concerned.”

It may be thirty years since the pop queen strutted her stuff alongside the LGBTQ+ community in the music video for her big hit “Vogue”, but we are still a way off the liberal and accepting world Madonna strived to create. In “Dark Ballet”, she plays with pianos and synthesizers to celebrate the “beautiful life” she hopes to live in. Two minutes in, the track starts to get weird and while we don’t love the jarring vocoder, we can respect that Madonna is still taking risks after over thirty years in the spotlight.

“Crave” on the other hand, is a far more authentic Madonna moment. She sings with an acoustic guitar and her voice is rippling with emotion. It feels more honest and while she still plays with different sounds, it is less of a circus and more of a true Madonna performance. “Crazy” on the other hand, has a totally different flavor. She plays with ’90s trip-hop, conjuring memories of Morcheeba and Massive Attack.

Overall, Madame X is such a mishmash of genres that it is hard to pinpoint what it is that ties the whole thing together. Even the vocals lack consistency, often getting lost in vocoders and playful accents. It is often unclear what Madonna is trying to do with Madame X and it often feels like she is guest singing on a compilation album from a series of artists.

Nonetheless, there is due respect for Madonna, who has continued to not just make music but experiment with it, despite the industry pushing her to retire. Madame X may not be the greatest album of her career, but it’s a reminder that Madonna is nowhere near ready to call it a day. And for that, we commend her.

The music video for the collaboration sees Madonna taking on the role of her alter ego Madame X. It opens with a shot of the New York City skyline, while the main protagonist delivers another one of her signature monologues. The video shows Madonna and Swae Lee using carrier pigeons to send love notes to each other until they’re finally reunited at the very end.

The video was directed by Nuno Xico, and it’s pretty amazing to watch since it constantly shifts between color-filled and black and white shots.

Madame X will be released on June 14th, and “Crave” isn’t the only amazing collaboration Madonna has in store. She previously released singles “Medellín” with Maluma and “Future” with Quavo.
