]]>Magic Mike was released in 2012, and it drew inspiration from Tatum’s own experiences working as a stripper before finding fame in Hollywood. Soderbergh directed the first movie, but only returned as editor and cinematographer for the sequel Magic Mike XXL.
The success of this franchise transcends the big screen and it spawned a successful stage experience, Magic Mike Live. It also served as the inspiration for the reality competition series Finding Magic Mike on HBO Max, with Tatum and Soderbergh serving as executive producers.
These projects have shown that the audience still has an appetite for the world of Magic Mike, and Soderbergh is looking forward to giving us another chapter of this story.
“As soon as I saw what Channing, [screenwriter] Reid [Carolin], and the Magic Mike choreographic team did with the live show, I said we have to make another movie. Mike Lane’s dream of connecting people through dance must be realized,” said Soderbergh in an official statement.

]]>“When we were shooting Magic Mike, I looked at myself in a thong and thought: ‘well Chan, say goodbye to your career!’ ” said Tatum, who will serve as a producer, in a statement. “So the idea that seven years later a Pulitzer Prize-winning creative team would be making a full-fledged musical prequel is definitive proof that God loves strippers. I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter in the Magic Mike story. So get ready, Boston. The road to Broadway begins on November 30!”
According to Deadline, Trip Cullman (Lobby Hero) is attached as director with Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) providing the score and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee) providing the book. Camille A. Brown, who is known for her work on Once On This Island, will take care of the choreography part.
Magic Mike The Musical will be set before the 2012’s original and its sequel, 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, and will tell “the story of college-student-turned-male-entertainer Mike Lane. Struggling to make ends meet, Mike takes a job dancing at an exclusive night club… and winds up loving every minute of it. But as he scrambles to hide his alter ego from his dad and girlfriend, he finds himself needing to make some difficult choices. Can Mike follow his dreams without losing more than his clothes?”
