The second season of Russian Doll is currently on its way, and its co-creator and main star Natasha Lyonne is holding out for another one. If her vision for this show comes to fruition, the ground-breaking Netflix series will end after a total of three seasons.

Lyonne discussed the future of this comedy show in a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter and said she still envisions it as a three-season show.

“I know there has to be space left open for something beyond my limited imagination in this moment to know if that is still where the series begins, middles and ends. Maybe it’s only two seasons. Maybe it’s four seasons. Right now, it feels quite clearly that it is those three,” said Lyonne.

The Orange Is the New Black actress created this series alongside Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler, and they’ve received nothing but rave reviews since its premiere in February. Russian Doll will be competing in 11 different categories at this year’s Emmy Awards, including outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Netflix gave us one of the most groundbreaking shows of the year with Russian Doll, and there’s more of it coming. The streaming giant has renewed the series for its second season.

Showrunner and star Natasha Lyonne discussed the show alongside Netflix content VP Cindy Holland in a recent interview at Recode’s annual Code Conference, and they confirmed the show’s renewal in a cheeky exchange.

After Holland asked Lyonne if she wants to do season two, the actress replied by saying, “Same show, just weirder? Are you sure? Nadia Vulvokov is a coder, as you know, so I guess it would be somewhat appropriate to maybe have this be the time and place to say yes, very much so, I would love to do that, Cindy.”

Russian Doll follows the adventures of a cynical young woman, who keeps dying and waking up at a party that’s being thrown in her honor on that same evening and tries to find a way out of this strange time loop. Lyonne created this critically acclaimed series alongside Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler.

If you’re a fan of Natasha Lyonne as Nicky Nichols in Orange Is The New Black, we doubt you will be disappointed with her performance in Russian Doll, which might as well be a spin-off series about Nicky’s life after Litchfield.

Lyonne’s character Nadia, is a self-destructive, drug-taking New Yorker with a lovable personality and a heart of gold. Just like Natasha, the series is quirky, cheeky and filled with charm and character.

Nonetheless, when the series begins we’re a little worried that it’s the same story we’ve seen before. First, Billy Murray delivered an iconic performance as a man on loop in Groundhog Day and more recently, Happy Death Day sabotaged the concept by killing off Tree Gelbman over and over again in corny death scenes.

This time round, Nadia keeps dying on repeat and gets brought back to the same moment, at her 36th birthday party. Sometimes, she survives a couple of days before dying in a tragic accident while other times, she barely makes it out of the party before falling down the stairs and twisting her neck. This time round though, there’s a twist. Nadia isn’t alone.

A couple of episodes in, just when we’re wondering where the series could go, Nadia bumps into Alan (Charlie Barnett). This is great for two reasons. First of all, he’s an intriguing new character and adds a major twist to the story. Secondly, his girlfriend is played by Dascha Polanco, aka Daya Diaz in Orange Is The New Black.

So as it turns out, Russian Doll did bring something new to the table and we suddenly find ourselves completely hooked. We’re no longer just watching for Natasha Lyonne, we’re watching because we genuinely want to know what the hell is going on and how or even if they will manage to break the painful time loop.

When characters start disappearing along with all mirrors and Alan’s pet fish, it becomes apparent that the series has some darker undertones that we weren’t anticipating. Just like an actual Russian doll, the series has layers upon layers and inside each is a new surprise. Along the way we’re laughing and shaking our heads at the dark humour and destructive quirks.

At the end of the day, Russian Doll is a hipster New York show filled with seductive tunes and too many cigarettes. It’s a quirky take on an overdone concept but just like Nadia, Natashia Lyonne manages to take something damaged, polish it off and transform it into something wonderful.

Netflix has announced that it has ordered a new comedy produced by Amy Poehler under Paper Kite banner.

The streaming network announcement confirms a new straight-to-series comedy starring Natasha Lyonne, best known for her role as Nicky on Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, which earned her an Emmy nomination in 2014.

Starring alongside Lyonne is Leslye Headland as the main star. Headland wrote the first episode, and will co-write the rest of the series with Lyonne. The writer-director for films such as Bachelorette said in a statement, “these women are heroes of mine and to work with them at a company that promotes originality and creativity is a thrill.”

The comedy follows a young woman named Nadia (Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.

“So excited to get cracking with the intensely brilliant Leslye Headland, the GOAT with a heart of gold Amy Poehler, and Netflix, the safe haven I’ve been searching for since the ’80s,” Lyonne said in a statement. “Deeply moved to work with such heavy hitters and to share our show with the world.”
