]]>The Freddie Mercury biopic was the dark horse in the race for best drama film, but it ended up beating obvious favorites like A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were expected to win awards for their performances in this movie, but that never happened since Rami Malek and Glenn Close bested them in their respective categories.
The comedy categories were easier to predict, and Green Book took home to the main award of the night, while Christian Bale (Vice) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) won the acting categories
When it comes to TV, the Golden Globe voters bid farewell to The Americans by awarding the last season of this show with a shiny trophy for best drama. The Kominsky Method won big in comedy categories, while American Crime Story proved to be the best miniseries of the year.

]]>Rami Malek has been chosen as the recipient of the honor for this year’s 30th Palm Springs International Film Festival for his performance as Queen’s frontman in the biopic film, Bohemian Rhapsody.
“In the film Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek fully brings to life and embodies musical legend Freddie Mercury, in what is truly an outstanding performance for this fine actor,” said festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “For his portrayal that is garnering much critical acclaim, it is our honor to present the 2018 Breakthrough Performance Award to Rami Malek.”
Malek joins past recipients of the award including Mahershala Ali, Mary J. Blige, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jeremy Renner.
The 37-year-old actor joins previously announced honoree Glenn Close, who will receive the Icon Award.

]]>The dynamite biopic about the legendary rock band Queen has rocked its audience to the tune of an estimated $50 million opening weekend across 4,000 theaters in the US and Canada. Bohemian Rhapsody will score the second biggest opening for a music biopic ever, behind 2015’s Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million).
According to Entertainment Weekly, the film was projected to debut in the $35 million to $40 million range. But it definitely exceeded expectations, dethroning the also hugely successful Halloween as the No. 1 film in North America.
Starring as the band’s frontman Freddie Mercury is Rami Malek. While critical reviews are mixed, everyone agrees that Malek’s portrayal of Mercury is spot on. The film has received a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

]]>When he created Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail expected it to be a niche TV series with a small devoted following. It exceeded everyone’s expectations and even received a Golden Globe for the Best Drama Series. USA Network didn’t want to cancel it any time soon, but Esmail felt it’s time to say goodbye. He was building the story toward one conclusion and felt that the conclusion is finally here.
“Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story,” explained Esmail.
Mr. Robot centers on vigilante hacker Elliot Alderson, who becomes a part of an anarchist organization that’s trying to take down the corrupt corporation he works for. It aired in 2015 and gained a cult following in the years to come. In addition to Rami Malek, this hacker drama also stars Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, and Christian Slater, who received a Golden Globe for his performance.

]]>Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek as Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury and from the looks of it, Malek’s portrayal is absolutely spot on. The sneak peek of the film that chronicles the band’s path to fame showed just how much Malek immersed himself in the role, completely transforming into Mercury, nailing the look as well as the moves.
The project has been long time in the making and Malek wasn’t first pick for the role. It was Sacha Baron Cohen that was originally cast for the leading role, however, exited the production due “creative differences.”
“Basically, they wanted to make a movie about the band and I wanted to make it a little more about Freddie,” Cohen told ET in 2013.
The production suffered another setback when original director Bryan Singer dropped out due to “unexpected unavailability” and replaced by Dexter Fletcher in December 2017.
Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled to hit theaters October 24 in the UK and November 2 in the US

]]>The network announced the news Wednesday, two day after Bryan Singer’s firing. Production will resume next week with Fletcher hired to take over as director of the Queen biopic.
Fletcher has both acting and directing credits which include Kick-ass, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Eddie the Eagle, Sunshine on Leith, and Wild Bill respectively.
Production on the film was temporarily put on hold due to Singer’s “unexpected unavailability.” However, the absence which resulted in a production shutdown, days later led to Singer’s termination. The ousted director then issued a statement saying that his termination was the result of the production “unwilling to accommodate” his return to the US to tend to a sick family member, and not due to on-set disputed with Rami Malek who star’s as Freddie Mercury.
“Rumors that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true,” he writes. “While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving.”
Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2018.
