The feature is based on JD Vance’s bestselling memoir, and is a modern exploration of the American dream and follows three generations of an Appalachian family as told by its youngest member, a Yale law student forced to return to his hometown.

Howard will direct from a script penned by The Shape of Water screenwriter Vanessa Taylor. Howard will also produce alongside Brian Grazer and Karen Lunder for Imagine Entertainment. Julie Oh and Vance will executive produce.

Deadline describes Hillbilly Elegy as a “modern exploration of the American Dream and three generations of an Appalachian family as told by its youngest member, a Yale Law student forced to return to his hometown.”

This Netflix film isn’t the only exciting project that Amy Adams has in store. She recently wrapped up production on highly-anticipated thriller The Woman in the Window, and is attached to a rumored Enchanted sequel.

Deadline confirms that the film version of J.D. Vance’s lauded bestseller was snagged by the streaming giant. The service will pay a whopping $45 million to fully finance the feature. According to the outlet, Netflix outbid rivals by almost double.

The film is directed by Ron Howard from a script adapted to the screen by Vanessa Taylor (The Shape Of Water). Imagine Entertainment secured the movie rights to the memoir in 2017.

The film is based on Vance’s memoir titled, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. The story is about growing up poor in the Rust Belt and navigating struggles including drug addiction, and social and economic challenges.

Just like Roma, Hillbilly Elegy could be hitting theaters first before it shows up on the streaming service, but that remains to be seen.
