The film is based on the true story of Ruth Coker Burks (Wilson), a single mother and devout Christain living in 1980s Arkansas during the time of the AIDS epidemic. Burks learns about AIDS from her handsome neighbor (Bomer) who’s moved back from New York after his life partner passes away from the disease. Burks decides to become an activist and caregiver to help those suffering from AIDS in America.

Michael Arden, who was nominated for two Tony Awards as a theater director will helm the film, which will make it his feature film debut.

“It’s a great honor and privilege to tell this important story about the responsibility one human has to another, especially in a time of crisis. As a gay man, I feel that Ruth’s story of empathy in the face of great prejudice and adversary is one so needed in our modern time,” Arden said when discussing the film.

The Book Of Ruth will start filming this year.

His Dark Materials is set between many parallel worlds, and it follows two children embarking on a magical adventure through these alternative universes. It’s the second attempt to adapt this popular sci-fi series, following The Golden Compass from 2007 which failed to capture the spirit of the first novel.

The two episodes of the upcoming adaptation will be directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper. Jack Thorne was in charge of writing the screenplay and did everything in his power not to disappoint the fans of the original trilogy.

“You realize that you’ve got a responsibility not to let them down, but you’re really excited about being given the opportunity to play in that amazing, amazing world. The most important thing is being loyal to the books, and trying to tell those books as well as we possibly can,” explained Thorne.

The first season of this promising project will premiere later this year on BBC. Its star-studded cast features the likes of Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
