Santa Clarita Diet joins One Day At A Time, Travelers, Love, Bloodline, Hemlock Grove and Daredevil, and has been canceled by Netflix after three seasons. 

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement. “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller, and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

The dark comedy followed Sheila (Drew Barrymore), a real estate broker transformed into a zombie and her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) in the LA suburb of Santa Clarita.

“Like our audience, we were all-in on Sheila and Joel. Their relationship, in the face of incredible adversity, was inspiring to write and to watch.  Mostly, they were funny, which, in a comedy, is important.  Working with Drew and Tim, along with the immensely talented Liv and Skyler, was a joy and a once in a lifetime experience,” showrunner Victor Fresco and exec producer Tracy Katsky said in a joint statement Friday.

“Netflix took a chance on this odd show and for that, we will always be grateful.  They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work.  Until about noon today.  Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so it ended. We’ll miss it but are proud of the work we did and will always appreciate the love and enthusiasm we felt from our audience. It if was up to them, Sheila and Joel would continue for another 10,000 years.”

It’s been a while since we watched the second season of Drew Barrymore’s hilariously gruesome show but after a brief rundown of what’s happened so far, we were super ready for season 3. We quickly learned that if things seemed wild last season, then they were about to get a whole lot wilder. This time round, everything was pushed to even further extremes and it just made the whole thing even more hysterical.

Let’s take poor Garry as a symbol for the show’s madness. In season one, he was brutally murdered by Sheila and in season 2, he was reintroduced as a zombified head. Sheila and Joel forgot to inject him with the serum so, in season 3, we are reintroduced to him as the disgustingly haggard and decrepit head which is 10x more gross than it was before.

This is basically what happens to everything else in the show: Anne’s solo worship of Sheila becomes a cult; Eric and Abby’s daring antics become the subject of an FBI investigation; the hunt for Sheila becomes the sole mission of the Serbian knights and oh yeah, the undead virus is starting to spread.

Still, among all the wackiness and insanity that was season 3, the show had us pondering some pretty intense philosophical questions. This manifested significantly in Sheila’s quest for purpose. When Anne suggests to her that she might have been chosen by God, Sheila begins to peruse the life of the good. She joins a ‘meals on wheels’ company, hoping to bring some light into an old lady’s life but is quickly called out on the fact that she is only doing it to make herself feel better.

This spirals into the age-old question of whether it really is possible to be selfless. In the end, the closest thing to selflessness we witness is Sheila and the now undead old lady in a food coma gorging on the women they just killed together. This is what Santa Clarita Diet does.

So yeah, we rated the new season and it had us pondering life’s big question while snorting hysterically. The season finale wrapped things up just enough so that if the show was canceled it wouldn’t be a disaster, but also left things open enough that the show could easily continue. We’re hoping for the later.

The second season, which aired March 23, brought with it a whole new level of shocking and is quite frankly, hilarious.

The season kicks off with the insides and outsides of a man being sprawled all over the family’s shiny kitchen when Sheila gets angry. Nonetheless, the family decide that if they work together they might still be able to have a normal, happy family life despite Sheila’s condition. The absurdity of this notion is a source of humour throughout.

There is also more happening plot-wise in this season. The couple face the challenge of where to find food for Sheila now that they have seemingly run out of criminals in the neighbourhood to kill. They also do some detective work as they try to solve the mystery of what the hell happened for Sheila for her to wake up dead one morning with a hunger for human flesh. Oh yeah, it also turns out that she is not the only one of her kind.

Special credit needs to be given to Liv Hewson who gives a fantastic performance as Abby, the teenage daughter with a badass attitude who holds the family together. Nathan Fillion also returns as Garry’s head and provides not just an excellent comedic twist but raises some pretty deep ethical questions as Sheila and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) figure out what to do with him.

Overall, it is surprising to see how genuinely entertaining the season was and the ending has made a third season look very attractive.

The romantic-comedy centers on a washed-up actress who hires her unemployed stand-in, both played by Barrymore to complete court-ordered community service after being busted for tax evasion. This double act soon turns out to be useful for the stand-in who takes over the actress’s identity, boyfriend and career.

Barrymore will also be producing the film alongside Ember Truesdell, Chris Miller, and Nancy Juvonen-Fallon through Flower Films. Penning the script is Sam Bain with Jamie Babbit serving as director.
