The BAFTA TV Awards are coming back to London this spring, and the list of nominations is finally in. The final season of The Crown is among the top contenders with eight nods, but the Netflix anthology series Black Mirror is right behind with seven nominations.

According to BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip, this year’s list of nominees includes over 100 television programs across 12 broadcasters and streamers, and they’re proud to showcase this incredible roster of talent.

“It is a real privilege to announce today’s nominations which recognize the most gripping, entertaining, challenging, funniest, most informative, highest quality, and most impactful TV programs of 2023, as voted for by BAFTA members,” said Millichip in a statement.

The Crown will enter this year’s BAFTA TV Awards with eight nominations, starting with the acting nods for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville, and Salim Daw. Despite being the ceremony’s most-nominated show, the royal drama lost the best drama series nomination to The Gold, Happy Valley, Slow Horses, and Top Boy.

Black Mirror owes its seven nominations to the final Season 6 episode “Demon 79”. It received nominations for best limited drama series, best leading actress (Anjana Vasan), plus five craft awards.

The British Academy Television Awards will air live on BBC One on May 12 from the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The Crown entered familiar territory in Season 6, and its second part will stir even closer to the present. Netflix shared first-look photos of the show’s final episodes, including a glimpse of the blooming romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Season 6 – Part 2 of The Crown will kick off with Prince William (Ed McVey) struggling to adjust to his life at Eton following his mother’s tragic death. Things finally start looking up for him when he crosses paths with Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy), and the final season will chronicle the beginning of their fairytale romance.

Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) will spend most of Season 6 riding the wave of public opinion in the wake of Princess Diana’s death, while also trying to usher in a new era for the monarchy while preparing for her Golden Jubilee.

Prince Charles’ (Dominic West) second royal wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) will also be one of the major plotlines explored in the show’s final season.

The Crown will conclude its run on Netflix on December 14, with six new episodes. Since its premiere in 2016, this royal drama became a huge hit for the streamer and received many accolades, including the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best drama series.

Netflix gave us one of their very best historical dramas with The Crown, but all good things must come to an end. The final season of this royal series is just around the corner, and the streamer shared a new teaser trailer to announce its highly-anticipated release date.

The short clip chronicles Queen Elizabeth’s transformation over the years, giving us brief glimpses of the actresses who played her. Glances of Claire Foy and Olivia Colman are scattered throughout the teaser before Imelda Staunton takes center stage for one final time.

Season 6 will also see Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip), Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret), Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana), Dominic West (Prince Charles), Salim Daw (Mohamed Al Fayed), and Khalid Abdalla (Dodi Fayed) return to their respective roles from the previous season.

Several new cast members are set to join the series, including Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards, with Ed McVey and Luther Ford as younger and older versions of Prince William and Prince Harry, along with Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton.

Season 6 of The Crown will be divided into two parts, with the first four episodes set to premiere on November 16, followed by an additional six on December 14.

The Emmy Awards crowned their winners on Sunday night, and the major awards were mostly picked up by obvious front-runners. The Crown dominated the night with seven accolades in the drama field, while Ted Lasso dominated the comedy categories with four.

The Crown pulled quite an upset by picking up trophies in all the categories it was running. Its stars Josh O’Connor, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Gillian Anderson collected acting awards in their respective categories, while the show itself won awards for outstanding drama series, outstanding directing, and outstanding writing for a drama series.

Ted Lasso also had an impressive showing in the comedy field and won the award for outstanding comedy series. Its stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, and Brett Goldstein were awarded acting Emmys for their performances on the show. HBO Max series Hacks was right behind with three awards, including the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Jean Smart.

Mare of Easttown was the big winner of the night when it comes to limited series, and its stars Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson walked away with acting awards. This series, however, missed out on the award for outstanding limited or anthology series, which went to The Queen’s Gambit.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 19th, with Cedric the Entertainer serving as the host.

The awards season came to a close in the U.S. as the Oscar trophies were handed out on Sunday night, but things are just heating up across the pond. The list of BAFTA TV Awards nominees is in, with Steve McQueen’s historical mini-series Small Axe leading the way.

Small Axe is in the running for a total of 15 awards, including some of the leading categories. It will go head to head against Adult Material, I May Destroy You, and Normal People for the best mini-series award. The series’ stars John Boyega, Letitia Wright, Malachi Kirby, and Micheal Ward also received acting nominations in their respective categories.

Netflix’s royal drama The Crown was right behind with a total of 10 nominations. It’s in the running for the best drama award, and several of its stars—including Josh O’Connor, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tobias Menzies—have been nominated in different acting categories.

After being snubbed by several major award shows, Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You finally received the credit it deserves with eight nominations. The list of major contenders also includes Normal People, I Hate Suzie, and Adult Material.

2021 British Academy Television Awards will take place on June 6th, with Richard Ayoade serving as host.

The SAG Awards is one of the most significant award shows setting the stage for the Oscars, and this year’s ceremony was one for the ages. Despite its scaled-down format, the show brought several surprises and historic wins that could change the course of this year’s Oscar race.

In a category dominated by POC-led movies, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 managed to come out victorious and pick up the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. With this win, Michael Keaton became the first actor with three wins in this category, after winning with Birdman (2014) and Spotlight (2015).

This year’s SAG Awards were also a historic night for actors of color, who dominated all four acting categories in the movie field. Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis were rewarded for their performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, while Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari) picked up the awards for their supporting roles.

The TV winners were much easier to predicts, and The Crown and Schitt’s Creek dominated the field with two wins each. Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) were also amongst the major winners and cemented their status as Emmy front-runners.

The SAG Awards brought several pretty unexpected wins that could upend this year’s Oscar race. The winners in some categories are even more difficult to call after this ceremony, but we’ll know who’ll come out victorious in just three weeks.

After a lot of anticipation, the Golden Globes kicked off the final stage of the award season, bringing several surprises our way. Among the many unexpected winners, the top prizes of the night went to obvious contenders—Chloé Zhao’s drama Nomadland and Netflix’s The Crown.

Nomadland was named as the best drama motion picture, while Zhao made history as the first woman of Asian descent and second woman ever to win the best director award. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm ruled the comedy categories with a total of two awards.

The acting categories featured several expected wins, including Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous victory for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but they were mostly full of surprises. Most notably, Andra Day managed to beat the likes of Viola Davis and Frances McDormand and win the best drama actress award for The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

When it comes to the TV side of the aisle, The Crown was an absolute winner with four awards. In addition to winning the best drama series, its stars Josh O’Connor, Emma Corrin, and Gillian Anderson picked up the acting awards in their respective categories. The list of major winners also included Schitt’s Creek and The Queen’s Gambit with two awards each.

The 78th Golden Globe Awards took place on February 28th, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the ceremony.

Season five will be The Crown’s last season with Imelda Staunton set to portray Queen Elizabeth II.

News of the casting, as well as the show’s official season count, was annoyed by Peter Morgan in a statement Friday.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st Century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” Morgan said. “At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop. I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start. As an actor, it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honored to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion,” Staunton said in a statement.

Season four of The Crown is said to track the 1980s, yet it is not clear what period the fifth—and now final—season will cover.

The Crown seasons one-three are currently streaming on Netflix.
