The Good Doctor was inspired by the South Korean series of the same name after Daniel Dae Kim brought the idea to its showrunner David Shore. Over the course of the past few years, it centered on the trials and tribulations of Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgeon with a troubled past, working at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

Shore, his fellow showrunner Liz Friedman and executive producer Erin Gunn said they’re incredibly proud of the work they’ve done, and thanked their partners at ABC and Sony.

“The Good Doctor has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve,” said the trio in a statement.

The Good Doctor will return for its seventh and final season on February 20, which is expected to feature 10 episodes due to strike-related delays.

Multiple outlets confirm that ABC has given an early season 4 renewal to its hit medical drama series. The Good Doctor is currently 13 episodes into season 3.

In addition to Highmore who stars as lead Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, the series also stars Antonia Thomas, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Tamlyn Tomita.

The Good Doctor follows autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy (Highmore), who overcomes personal and professional hurdles while working at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. The series also stars Richard Schiff, Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Hill Harper and Fiona Gubelmann.

According to TVLine the series’ sophomore run is averaging 6.8 million total viewers and just over a 1.1 demo rating, down 30 and 40 percent from its freshman run. It is ABC’s second most successful scripted drama series. 

ABC also handed out renewals for Shark Tank and A Million Little Things.

The Good Doctor, which is based on a South Korean series of the same name, revolves around Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who gets a job at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Dae Kim will play Dr. Jackson Han, who becomes the new chief of surgery at the hospital and whose arrival puts Murphy’s career in danger.

“As a fan of our show, I’m thrilled to be doing a guest arc with such a talented, kind and hard-working cast,” said Kim. “David and I have been looking for the right opportunity and we’ve found a character that’s both dynamic and surprising. It’s an added bonus for my character to be directed by our own Freddie Highmore, who’s proving to be as talented behind the camera as in front of it. it’s been a lot of fun already and I’m excited for the episodes to air.”

Daniel Dae Kim noticed the original South Korean version of the series in 2013 and obtained the rights through his production company. After CBS passed on the opportunity to pick up the show, Dae Kim teamed up with House creator David Shore and produced a pilot for ABC. The network liked the project and ended up giving The Good Doctor a full season order.
