The Emmy-winning series will keep expanding the world of Gilead.

The Handmaid’s Tale will return for an additional fourth season. The news was confirmed by Hulu Friday. The pickup comes as the show’s airing the final episodes of its third season.

The dystopian drama based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name follows the story of life in totalitarian Gilead, where handmaids are only valued for their ability to reproduce.

The Emmy-winning series stars Elisabeth Moss with Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O.T. Fagbenle, Max Minghella, and Samira Wiley.

Season three began in the aftermath of June’s (Moss) decision to stay in Gilead but give her daughter to Emily (Bledel) to take to Canada.

“I thought it was really smart because, after the end of last season, I can’t imagine how you miss any moment after that,” Moss told The Hollywood Reporter of the controversial choice. “You need to be right there with her and experiencing what she’s experiencing. Every second is so, so important. You can’t skip anything. It’s so important to know what her next move is. So I thought it was really smart, and it was also obviously just a very cool, entertaining kind of way to pick up the season.”

A slew of trailers dropped during Super Bowl 2019, including a first teaser trailer for Hulu’s highly anticipated third season of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The teaser begins with Moss looking out a window. “It’s morning again in America,” a narrator says. “Today, more women will go to work than ever before in our country’s history. This year, dozens of children will be born to happy and healthy families.” But then June aka Offred (Elisabeth Moss) voice takes over and she says, “Wake up, America, morning’s over,” to the backdrop of handmaids in front of what used to be the Washington Monument and is now is a cross.

The eerie trailer hints that life after June returns to Gilead to retrieve her daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) will be more dangerous than ever. Earlier in the week, footage released by the streaming service also featured June in the pale blue garb for “Marthas,” which could mean she’s joined their network.

Hulu has yet to confirm the debut of the upcoming season, but if the first two seasons are an indication, than expect season three of The Handmaid’s Tale to arrive sometime this spring.

With the premiere date ever so close, the cast and producers of Hulu’s hit dystopian series, The Handmaid’s Tale, dish on the upcoming second season.

The cast and creatives from the series attended a panel at Sunday’s PaleyFest panel at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where they dished on what’s to come in Gilead.

The panel included footage from the second season that included a sneak peek at Ofglen’s (Alexis Bledel) life in the Colonies and the joy when Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) secret, that she’s carrying a baby for Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) is revealed to the other handmaids.

Showrunner Bruce Miller told EW ahead of the panel that the next season will explore aspects of Margaret Atwood’s novel not yet dealt with in the first season.

“Certain books you really feel like the end of the story is the end of the story; here, you almost feel like the book is the beginning of the story. So we really tried to follow our own curiosity and follow what we think is cool in the book that we didn’t get the chance to explore.”

Atwood is very much involved in the project and supportive of the creative decision made by the show’s execs, “She was happy for us to have our own plan,” Miller shared. “So that kind of encouragement really helps, when you have an author who we respect and love to have as part of the process, to have her blessing on our continuation of her world gives you a large amount of freedom and takes a lot of that pressure off. I think a lot of that pressure is worrying about making people mad, because I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Margaret Atwood mad at me.”

Miller and executive producer Warren Littlefield teased that “no one is safe” adding that in Gilead, “anyone could die.”

Hulu has amped up the anticipation with another gory season 2 teaser.

The teaser was released on Thursday, International Women’s Day,  and had female lead Elisabeth Moss say “Seriously? What the actual f—?”

The teaser opens with Elisabeth Moss who portrays Offred in the dystopian series narrating the all too familiar horrors of the Gilead, “Wear the red dress, wear the wings, shut your mouth, be a good girl, roll over and spread your legs, ‘yes, ma’am,’ ‘may the Lord open.’”

The footage also features other characters including Samira Wiley as Moira, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, and Alexis Bledel as Ofglen.

The horror, dread, and cruelty of the show will continue well into the second season as pregnant June struggles to secure a future for her unborn child.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 will premiere its first two episodes Wednesday, April 25 on Hulu.

Season two of The Handmaid’s Tale will be introducing a new character!

EW has confirmed that actress Cherry Jones has been cast to play June’s (Elisabeth Moss) mother.

Holly will be introduced to viewers in episode of the second season and is described by Hulu as “an outspoken feminist and a judgmental but loving mother to June.” Whether she’ll be seen in flashbacks or the show’s dystopian present-day is still unknown.

There’s no doubt Jone’s casting is integral to the onscreen adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, so much so that incorporating the character into the series was in the works since the first season. According to show runner Bruce Miller, for such an impactful character, it’s all about timing.

“We’ve been thinking about her a lot. June’s mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time,” Miller told The Hollywood Reporter. “June’s memories of her mother and her activism are very vibrant in the book, so we’ve been talking about her from day one of season one, and it just didn’t seem like enough time to do her justice. In season two, we mention her a little bit, but we just don’t want to short-shrift her story. It’s a story we want to tell — she was one of the most memorable characters.”

Moss told THR “she’s a terrific literary character who’s now going to come to life for the first time, and so it was important to me who that was. I was obsessed with it for weeks and bothering everybody about it — way before anybody cared to talk about it. Cherry was my fantasy choice. We sent her the script, she wrote a lovely email back and she said yes almost immediately.”

The Handmaid’s Tale returns on Wednesday, April 25.

It’s time to venture outside of Gilead.

Hulu finally announced the return of the dystopian drama. The second season of The Handmaid’s Tale will return on Wednesday, April 25 with the first two episodes of the season.

The series was a huge success for the streaming service, taking home both the Emmy and Golden Globe for Best Drama Series.

Fans have been wondering what’s in store for the upcoming season. Show-runner Bruce Miller told EW that the he and Margaret Atwood, who wrote the novel by the same name, began discussing season two before the first season was even complete.

“The biggest barrier of season two was season one,” Miller said. “You sort of intimidate yourself. But at a certain point, you can’t spend all your time second-guessing things. Instead, you just have to remember to try and tell a good story.”

Hulu did more than confirm the premiere date of the upcoming season, it also released the first trailer for the new season, and it is grim and eerie. The trailer reveals that the oft-mentioned colonies outside of Gilead will definitely be part of the season. The trailer shows Moira (Samira Wiley) and Luke (O-T Fagbenle) safe together in Canada. But there’s no doubt that the highlight of the trailer is a reunion between pregnant June and Nick (Max Minghella), the father of her unborn child.

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, where the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honors the most outstanding performances and shows of the year, was aired Sunday on CBS. The TV’s biggest event, hosted by Stephen Colbert, was held at Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and HBO’s Big Little Lies are tied for most wins with five awards each, followed by Saturday Night Live with four including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. Veep took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award for third consecutive year, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus made Emmy history for winning the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for sixth straight year in a row.

Donald Glover, the creator of FX series Atlanta, also made history as the first black director to win the award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and later in the night, he won his second Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Nicole Kidman, who earned her first Emmy, delivered a strong message about domestic abuse during her acceptance speech for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

“.. I want them to know that sometimes when you’re acting, you get a chance to bring a bigger message, and this is their contribution and your contribution,” she said. “We shone a light on domestic abuse. It is a complicated, insidious disease. It exists far more than we allow ourselves to know. It is filled with shame and secrecy and by you acknowledging me with this award, it shines a light on it even more. So thank you, thank you, thank you. I bow down to you.”

A new Margaret Atwood TV adaptation is coming to our screen. Netflix just dropped the first trailer to its upcoming miniseries Alias Grace, and it is terrifying.

Atwood’s historical-fiction novel is based on true events and centers on Grace Marks, a Canadian maid who is accused and convicted of murdering her employers in 1843. Played by Sarah Gadon, the trailer reveals that Marks claims not to have any recollection of the crime. However, even though she claims to have amnesia, the trailer also shows just how creepy the character is, so perhaps the opposite may be true.

Also starring in the small screen adaptation is Edward Holcroft, who plays a young doctor obsessed with Marks. The apparently abusive employers and alleged victims are played by Anna Paquin and Paul Gross. The trailer also glimpses over the character of Jeremiah Pontelli, played by Zachary Levi, who warns Marks while still working as a maid that she is “surrounded by danger.”

If the adaptation of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is anything to go by, Netflix’s Alias Grace will be another critically praised series, premiering November 3.

After receiving 13 Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series, Elisabeth Moss spoke with EW about what can fans expect from the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Moss was also nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Handmaid Offred in the Margaret Atwood Adaptation.

The actress told EW that even though this isn’t the first time she’s received Emmy nominations, this time, as the producer, it feels much more personal. She added that when producing it’s really about being on the inside of something so she can’t help but feel different.

Moss loves it when fans get personal as well, hearing their reactions and thoughts about the first season.

“Having the outside perspective is really moving and gratifying and also really fun. It’s really fun for me to hear people’s questions and thoughts and to hear if they are Team Nick or Team Luke and I eat it all up. I love that stuff. It’s very fun for me because it feels personal and I have my own opinions about things, too. I feel like a fan as well. I’m asked a lot which team I’m on but I never say.”

When asked about what fans can expect from the second season, Moss replied that even though she has just read the outline for the first episode, she can say that “[it]’s insane!… There is literally no way that anyone can guess what happens. You can try, but you won’t do it. It’s incredible. We’re really looking to blow people away, and we have every intention to break [the story] open and go even further in all directions. We have no intention of doing anything else than being even more balls to the wall than we were in season 1.”
