]]>HBO’s spokeswoman described The Idol as one of “HBO’s most provocative original programs” and said they were pleased by the strong audience response despite deciding not to go forward with Season 2.
“After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work,” reads HBO’s statement.
The Idol followed the trials and tribulations of up-and-coming pop singer Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who’s trying to make a comeback after suffering a nervous breakdown. Her life gets even more complicated once she develops a complicated relationship with a modern-day cult leader and nightclub owner (The Weeknd).
Created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, The Idol also starred Troye Sivan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria. It featured a total of five episodes, and the first two were shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival ahead of the HBO premiere in June.

]]>After over a decade in the making, Avatar: The Way of Water finally hit the theatres on December 16, earning a worldwide total of $434.5 million over the course of the first weekend, including $134 million domestically.
The Weeknd celebrated its release by dropping a music video for “Nothing is Lost” one day earlier, after it’s been prominently featured in the film’s most recent trailer. According to the press release, this song is meant to “speak to the epic scope, breathtaking action, and thrilling drama of the film itself”.
“Nothing is Lost” is featured in the film’s end credits, and The Weeknd worked closely with composer Simon Franglen to bring it to life. He also brought the Swedish House Mafia on board, and they helped him transform this song about a Na’vi family into a synth-pop ballad.
“Nothing is Lost” is one of the 82 songs eligible for this year’s Academy Award for best original song, and we know if it’s still in competition when Oscar shortlists are announced on December 21.

]]>Dawn FM was released on January 7th, and it serves as the follow-up to The Weeknd’s chart-topping record After Hours. In addition to the lead single “Take My Breath”, it also featured collaborations with Tyler, the Creator, and Lil Wayne, and narration from Jim Carrey.
Dawn FM blasted to no. 1 in the UK, becoming the first album released in 2022 to do so, but it failed to replicate the same kind of success. It hit no. 2 with h 148,000 album-equivalent units earned after being bested by Gunna’s DS4Ever.
Despite failing to hit the top spot, Dawn FM is The Weeknd’s fifth studio album to make it to the top ten in the U.S. His debut album Kiss Land also entered the chart at no. 2, while Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy, and After Hours all topped the Billboard 200.
The Weeknd is expected to promote his last two albums in the After Hours til Dawn Stadium Tour, set to kick off this summer.

]]>The epic visual for this single was directed by Cliqua and it draws strong inspiration from the Matrix movies. This doesn’t come as a surprise since The Weeknd recently told GQ that if he could play any role in a past film, it would be Neo because these films “literally changed” his life.
“Take My Breath” may be inspired by The Matrix, but it’s been linked to another current movie—The Suicide Squad. It was supposed to premiere before the IMAX showings of this blockbuster, but it was eventually pulled due to its intense strobing effects.
“Take My Breath” gave us the taste of the singer’s fifth studio album, which he mentioned on several occasions under the working name The Dawn. It’s not his first single of 2021—he gave us several amazing collaborations in the past few months, including the chart-topping remix of “Save Your Tears”, featuring Ariana Grande.

The Weeknd and Grande are no strangers to releasing music together. Their first collaboration came in the form of the hit single “Love Me Harder”, which appeared on Grande’s second studio album My Everything. They later worked on the song “Off the Table”, from her latest album Positions.
Even before Grande jumped on the remix, “Save Your Tears” found significant success on the charts. It peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the third no. 5 record from After Hours, following the chart-topping hits “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights”.

He did it without any supporting acts, with a group of bandaged dancers in red jackets to keep him company.
With strict safety protocols in place, the Canadian singer let the music speak and performed some of his biggest hits, including “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”, and “The Hills”. The entire performance was an obvious nod to his latest album After Hours, and it featured the hit songs “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears”.
The Weeknd’s performances quickly led to an avalanche of memes on Twitter, mostly poking fun at his dazed and confused look. Viewers also had some hilarious things to say about his army of mummy dancers and sound problems, but it was all in good fun.

]]>Like the rest of The Weeknd’s discography, After Hours is the perfect mix of pop and R&B and it’s going to be the first album that we remember when we look back on 2020 in the future.
Taylor Swift’s surprise albums Folklore and Evermore are tough to place in a single genre because they walk the fine line between folk-pop and alternative rock—and that’s exactly their charm.
Dua Lipa served some major disco-pop vibes on her career-defining album Future Nostalgia, and almost every song from this album became an instant hit that we couldn’t help but listen to on repeat.
Lady Gaga’s long-awaited sixth studio album finally hit the shelves this year, and it was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish.
BTS set many major records in 2020 and proved themselves as A force to be reckoned with. Be was their second no. 1 album of the year, and it produced the chart-topping singles “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On”.

Dua Lipa charted at no. 4 with her new LP Future Nostalgia, and it was a big triumph for the “New Rules” singer. This is her highest-charting album in the US so far since her debut record only reached no. 27 on Billboard 200 chart back in 2017.
Billboard Hot 100 didn’t experience a significant shakeup this week, and the top three spots remained unchanged. The Weeknd topped the chart with “Blinding Lights”, Roddy Ricch was right behind with “The Box”, while Dua Lipa came in third with “Don’t Start Now”.
