Great news Vikings fans! The streaming giant continues the Vikings saga picking up a new prequel series titled Vikings: Valhalla. Per Deadline, Netflix has ordered 24 episodes of the new series.

Set 100 years after the original, Vikings: Valhalla “concludes and dramatizes the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived — Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada, and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant). These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe. This is the explosive next chapter of the Vikings legend,” per the streamer’s official description.

The new series hails from Vikings creator Michael Hirst. “I am beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our Vikings saga,” he said in a statement. “I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix. Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new storylines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history.”

Vikings will debut its sixth and final season December, 4.

Vikings will be ending its run after six seasons.

History’s hit scripted drama is wrapping with the upcoming 20-episode sixth season being its last. The show is currently half way through its fifth season.

But there is some hope for Vikings fans as the series creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television are in talks for a possible spinoff series. Deadline reports that a new series might hail from the same creative team as the original series and would potentially continue the Vikings story.

Meanwhile, fans can expect nothing short of extraordinary from the season five finale set to air this month.

“There is an extraordinary twist right at the end of the season, which brings about a change that you just haven’t seen coming, that seemed impossible,” Hirst teased in November. “So basically, you will experience, as you watch it, very unexpected twists and turns. But right at the end, there is something that — a story changing, and you can’t see that coming.”

The sixth and final season of Vikings is expected to debut later this year.

After launching his own production company, Michael Hirst is teaming up with MGM.

Green Pavillion Entertainment was established by Hirst alongside producing partners Moran O’Sullivan and James Flynn. Sharon Remmer has been named creative director and joins from Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions.

Hirst, who created Vikings and The Tudors, will now work together with MGM, which produced and distributed Vikings on a new TV adaptation of  the 1998 picture “Ronin.” This marks the first joint project between the movie studio and the startup.

“Having MGM Television as an ally in this venture will help us to build on our strengths and draw the best writers, directors and creative talent in the industry to our projects,” Hirst said.

Production chief for MGM Steve Stark said in a statement, “Michael Hirst, Morgan O’Sullivan and James Flynn have brilliantly shepherded Vikings for the past five years and, during that time, we have witnessed first-hand the quality of artists and talent that this team have expertly assembled to produce premium content on a massive scale.”
