Billed as a rockumentary-style presidential portrait, the Jimmy Carter docu explored how music became key to his political appeal, allowed him to connect with voters. and eventually helped him get elected. 

Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President was directed by Mary Wharton and written by Bill Flanagan.

“The film accurately captures my love for all music and the importance music has played in my personal and professional life. I remain hopeful and believe that music can serve to bring us together as a nation,” Carter said in a statement. “Rosalynn and I are pleased with the fine film Mary and Chris have made and thank all those involved for telling this story. We are thrilled that it will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival.”

The premiere event will take place on April 15 at New York’s Beacon Theatre and will be followed by live performances from Nelson, Paul Shaffer, and others.

The project, that has been in development since 2012 is finally making it to the stage according to Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis. 

Back to the Future: The Musical will finally hit the stage for its world premiere in 2020. It will show at the Manchester Opera House in the UK from February 20 through May 17. According to Playbill, a London engagement will follow at a West End venue but no Broadway plans have been announced.

Tony-winner John Rando is directing from a book by Bob Gale. Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard wrote the score. Zemeckis is attached as a producer.

“Bob Zemeckis and I have been trying to get this project off the ground for years, but good things take time and finally, the time is right,” said Gale. “Our cast is outstanding, the songs are fantastic, and director John Rando is doing an amazing job ensuring the show truly captures the magic of the movie. We’re thrilled that we can retell our story on stage in a brand-new way, and we’re certain that Back to the Future fans all over the world will share our enthusiasm. Multiple outlets confirm that Rocketman’s world premiere has been set for May 16. 

“We are incredibly honoured and excited to premiere our movie Rocketman at the Cannes film festival on May 16th. This has been a labour of love for all of us and we couldn’t dream of a better launching pad for this very special film,” said producers Rocket Pictures and Marv Films in a statement.

The film stars Taron Egerton as the musical icon. It is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who took the reins on the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after director Bryan Singer was fired.

The film is about the fantastical human story of John’s breakthrough years. It follows John’s early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. The film is titled after John’s 1972 song “Rocket Man”.It also stars Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

A domestic release has been slated for May 31.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s A Star Is Born will premiere at the 75th Toronto International Film Festival which runs from August 29 to September 8. 

The new take on the classic tale is also Cooper’s directorial debut. The four-time Oscar nominee stars as Jackson Maine who discovers struggling artist Ally (Gaga). The pair ultimately falls in love but as Ally’s career soars, the duo’s relationship suffers, all to the backdrop of beautiful country music. 

Tracks for the musical feature were written and performed by Gaga and Cooper in collaboration with Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, and Mark Ronson. Appearing in the film are Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle, and Sam Elliott.

According to Variety, the film will play out of competition and will make its debut screening on Monday, August 31.
