Young Sheldon follows Sheldon Cooper’s upbringing in the fictional town of Medford, Texas during the 90s. He’s a child prodigy struggling to fit in with people around him, who often consider him obnoxious because he has a sense of superiority due to his superior intellect.

Iain Armitage replaced Jim Parsons in the lead role in this prequel series, while the supporting cast included Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and Annie Potts, with Parsons serving as its narrator and executive producer.

Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, confirmed the show’s cancelation and praised it for successfully expanding The Big Bang Theory universe.

“Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice. It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start,” said Reisenbach in a statement.

Season 7 of Young Sheldon will premiere on CBS on February 15, 2024, and it will feature a total of 14 episodes.

“The Coopers are portrayed by an amazing cast, and we are looking forward to having the gifted writing staff mine even more of Sheldon’s hilarious backstory and the warm family dynamic that has made this comedy a favorite with audiences for the past two seasons,” said Thom Sherman, senior executive VP of programming at CBS.

CBS announced the news shortly after they gave a two-season renewal to Mom, another hit sitcom produced by Chuck Lorre.

The Big Bang character will meet Young Sheldon in a time-jumping crossover.

The CBS comedy, which is in its final season, will feature a crossover with three of the spinoff’s stars making cameos as their characters. According to Entertainment Weekly, during a December episode of The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage (Sheldon), Lance Barber (George) and Montana Jordan (Georgie) will appear as their spinoff characters.

It’s unclear how the crossover will be worked out considering Young Sheldon takes place almost thirty years prior to the setting of Big Bang. What is clear is that CBS and producer Warner Bros. TV are keeping details under wraps and are letting out zero hints.

Back in August Warner Bros. announced that it will be ending Big Bang, the longest-running multi-camera series in TV history this spring. The statement read:

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past 12 seasons. We, along with the cast, writers, and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and the series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

The hit series is currently in its 11th season with a confirmed 12th season, however, according to Johnny Galecki, that might be it. At the 2018 TCA Winter Press Tour, Galecki talked about The Bang’s eventual end.

“The only manner in which the cast has discussed wrapping [the show] has been that we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” Galecki said. “But I think at this point everyone’s very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”

Portraying the 9-year-old nerdy genius was a bit of a challenge as some qualities that were portrayed by adult Sheldon simply don’t translate well to a young child. For example, while adult Sheldon can be horrible to his best friends but still be loved by the audience, the same behavior would simply make a child look bratty. At the Television Critics Association press tour, Lorre said that a decision was made to have the young Sheldon simply be naïve and nerdy rather than a cynical young boy.

Parsons said that watching a younger version of the character which he played for ten years was a revitalizing and fun experience.

Fans might be expecting some cameo performances, however, Lorre said that as of now, nothing like that has been planned. He added that perhaps some plot lines on the prequel will resonate in Big Bang, somewhat of a ripple effect as the shows will go forward in time.
