The Super Mario Bros. Movie finally hit the theaters last week and it set several major records after just a few days in the theaters. It grossed $377 million worldwide during its opening weekend, scoring the biggest opening for an animated movie in history.

The record was previously held by Frozen 2 with $358 million, but Super Mario managed to cross that number after exceeding projection numbers. It grossed $204.6 million in North America and 173 million in other territories during its opening weekend, for a worldwide total of $377.6 million.

In addition to scoring the biggest opening for an animated movie, Super Mario also scored the biggest opening for a video game adaptation and the biggest opening of 2023 so far. It also had the third-highest Easter opening weekend of all time, behind Furious 7 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Super Mario’s box office numbers are especially impressive considering its mixed reviews and the backlash it received following Chris Pratt’s casting as the voice of Mario. The film’s cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened in theatres on April 5, and it will start streaming on Peacock on May 9 and on Netflix in late 2023.
