“The Wedding Singer” turns 20!

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the The Wedding Singer starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

In the film, Robbie Hart (Sandler) is a ’80s wedding singer from Ridgefield, New Jersey. Hart loves his job as a wedding singer and truly believes in ‘true love’. However, after being left at the altar by his future bride, Linda, he goes into a depression and is confused on how to move on with his life. Hart meets and befriends Julia Sullivan (Barrymore), who is engaged to businessman Glen Gulia (Matthew Glave). Robbie agrees to help Julia with planning her wedding and he eventually falls in love with her. The film ends with Robbie and Julia kissing at their wedding.

In an interview with Entertainment News back in 1998, Adam Sandler stated that “the main object of the movie is to make people laugh.” One of the funniest scenes in the film is Grandma Rosie (Ellen Albertini Dow) performing “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugar Hill Gang. Barrymore stated that this film “is a good fun funny movie.” She adds that “it has all the aspects of love,[yet] it does not compromise on its humor.”

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler also starred in 50 First Dates (2004) and Belended(2014).
