Mattel started plotting films around several of their prosperities following the success of Barbie, and one of these projects finally got a green life. The American Girl movie is officially happening, with Lindsey Anderson Beer writing the script and serving as one of the producers.

Beer (Sierra Burgess is a Loser) is a long-time fan of the American Girl doll franchise, and she has many fond memories of playing with these dolls as a child. She always enjoyed coming up with elaborate and immersive backstories for her American Girls, and she’ll soon get the chance to bring one of them to the big screen.

Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films, said that now feels like the perfect time to bring the American Girl film to life and celebrate this brand that has captured our hearts for decades.

“American Girl is a beloved franchise, rich in history and storytelling with millions of devoted fans… We are excited to continue Mattel Films’ momentum and collaborate with Paramount Pictures, Temple Hill Entertainment, and Lindsey Anderson Beer to bring American Girl to life on the big screen,” said Brenner in a statement.

After Barbie became the highest-grossing film of the year, Mattel started plotting several other projects themed around their popular toys. Lena Dunham is already attached to write and direct the Polly Pocket film starring Lily James, while projects themed around Barney, Hot Wheels, and Uno are also in development.
