Unfortunately, we won’t get to see this duo in the upcoming spin-off. Cast members of Aquaman won’t participate in this project, and neither will their director James Wan who’s currently working on the sequel, which is still in its early stages.  

First movie left the room for the follow-up, and DC confirmed they’re working on it back in January. It’s safe to expect Jason Momoa will return for the sequel in titular role, but he’s yet to confirm his involvement.

The unlikely superhero has officially dethroned the Caped Crusader and Man of Steel as highest grossing DC Extended Universe feature. 

The Jason Momoa-led feature is officially the highest worldwide box-office total of any DC Extended Universe. Aquaman has already surpassed Justice League’s$657, Man of Steel’s $668 million, Suicide Squad’s $746 million and Wonder Woman‘s $821 million. 

And now it has dethroned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice surpassing the latter in worldwide ticket sales.  Since its release last month, the Warner Bros. feature has grossed $887 million in comparison to the former title holder with $873 million. According to multiple reports, Aquaman is also likely to cross the $1 billion mark—a first for the franchise. 

The DC Extended Universe next releases Shazam! out April 5.

One of the main troubles with the feature was that it tried to do too many things at once. The 2h 22m film tried to deliver Aquaman’s origin story, introduce future enemy Back Manta while also telling the story of how Arthur defeated his tyrant brother to become King of Atlanta. By focusing on too much, scenes which should have been exciting became boring and the way each story wrapped up was vastly unfulfilling.

Visually, Aquaman was great and perhaps even superb at times. A lot of detail and imagination clearly went into bringing the lost city of Atlanta to life. The epic fight scene between Arthur and his brother in the “Ring of Fire” auditorium was particularly noteworthy and was one of the highlights of the film in terms of entertainment value.

On the other hand, some action shots were so cheesy they were laughable. The scene where Aquaman and Mera enter the Sahara Dessert with Pitbull’s disastrous remix of “Africa” by Toto playing in the background caused several audience members to snigger. Yes, Aquaman is the comic relief superhero in the Justice League, but James Wan instructed one dramatic hair flip too many. It was just too cringey to take seriously.

Still, we didn’t hate it. At the end of the day, James Wan told us a story in an imaginative, colorful way and even though the story fell short of a masterpiece, it wasn’t a total disappointment. A lot of this probably has to do with the fact that Jason Mamoa is so likeable and has single-handedly ensured that Aquaman will never be the butt of a superhero joke again.

Obviously, this review would not be complete without reference to the heartbreaking love story between Aquaman’s parents. The story of the lighthouse keeper and the Queen of Atlanta is exceptionally heartwarming and after 20 years of waiting, the moment the couple is reunited might have possibly triggered a tiny tear or two. It was the most, if not the only moment of the movie which was genuinely powerful, albeit charmingly predictable.

2.5/5: A cheesy adventure tale which in an age where superhero movies are thriving, just wasn’t quite good enough. Sorry Aquaman.

The stretch between Christmas Day and New Year’s is traditionally super busy with moviegoers and this year wasn’t an exception. Last weekend, the North American ticket sales hit $11.383 billion, surpassing the parallel week in 2016 which had a record of $11.382 billion in earnings. The domestic box office also reached a new benchmark with sales surpassing $11.383 billion for 2018 according to Comscore.

Christmas Day was a particularly good day for Aquaman, which crossed the $100 million mark after five days in theaters. The DC superhero feature starring Jason Momoa generated $22 million on Tuesday, which marks the sixth biggest Christmas Day box office hauls. 

Aquaman had considerable box office competition from Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, which pocketed $11.6 million bringing its total to $50.3m and Paramount’s Bumblebee, which finished third in the domestic box office with $8.9 million. Placing fourth is Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s comedy Holmes & Watson with $6. Rounding out the top five is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earning $5.5 million on Tuesday, bringing its domestic total to $73.5 million.

Julie Andrews has been tapped to voice star in Aquaman.

The 83-year-old actress will voice a key role in Warner Bros’ upcoming film. The character, Karathen, a mythical sea creature is described to be holding the key to assist Arthur Curry’s (Jason Momoa) broker peace between Atlantis and the dry land.

“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered,” Peter Safran, a producer on Aquaman, told the magazine Entertainment Weekly, who first broke the news. “And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer,” he said.

The casting means that Julie Andrews will hit movie theaters this Christmas with the DC franchise rather than with Mary Poppins Returns. Aquaman opens on December 21, just two days before the release of the sequel. While Andrews played the iconic Poppins in the 1964 original, in the sequel it is Emily Blunt who took on the lead role.

Andrews other voice star credits include animated blockbusters series like Shrek and Despicable Me.

In a recent interview, Momoa revealed that he even started pitching those ideas, which he came up with during the filming of the first film, to producers and Warner Bros. executives.

“I definitely have an opinion. Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready,” said the 39-year-old. “I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome… But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”

While it is great to see Jason Momoa being enthusiastic about Aquaman 2, Warner Bros. will first wait and see how the original movie does at the box office before making any decisions. The studio has been recently rethinking their entire strategy considering films based on DC comics heroes, which cause a delay of some previously announced projects.

It was recently announced that The Flash standalone movie, which was supposed to come out in early 2020, will now probably see its release in 2021 or even 2022. There is also no word on the release dates of Matt Reeves’ Batman movie, Cyborg standalone movie or Green Lantern Corps. movie.

Aquaman is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 21, 2018.

“It’s so funny because James said to me, ‘I so want you to do this,'” Kidman told ET during the Warner Bros. and DC press line at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. “And he said, ‘I’ll prove to you that I’ve always wanted you to do this. In all of my renderings, I drew you. So what’re you going to say?'”

Wan used Kidman’s face in the movie’s concept art of Queen Atlanna because he really wanted her for the role. The 51-year-old Australian actress couldn’t help but accept the part of playing the Atlantean matriarch.

During the Hall H panel at Comic-Con, she also joked about her stunts in the film. “My opening shot in the film is being washed up on a rock, and I got to lie there with massive waves washing over me,” she said. “And I kept thinking, ‘Come on, James! Give it to me! The bigger the better! This is why I’m doing this movie!’”

The Oscar winner also said that it’s her very first appearance at the Comic-Con which has been pretty “amazing.” But her time at the convention will be short as she has to return to the set of Big Little Lies.

“I have to be at work tomorrow. I have to do a rehearsal and then I have to be back on the set of Big Little Lies on Monday,” she said. “And being the professional that I am, I [have] to leave this afternoon so that I can prep.”

Aquaman hits theaters on Dec. 21.
